What do I know about this person? Which words and phrases stand out in this quote to show this persons feelings? Why would this person have these feelings about slavery?
If slavery is not wrong, nothing is wrong. Whenever I hear anyone arguing for slavery, I feel a strong impulse to see it tried on him personally.
I have often sung to drown my sorrow, but seldom to express my happiness. Crying for joy, and singing for joy, were alike uncommon to me while in the jaws of slavery.
I can only say that there is not a man living who wishes more sincerely than I do to see a plan adopted for the abolition of slavery.
I had reasoned this out in my mind, there was one of two things I had a right to, liberty or death; if I could not have one, I would have the other. I freed a thousand slaves I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew they were slaves.
