2 Social Responsibility  Refers to the duty of a business to contribute to the well-being of a community.  A business must weigh the interests and concerns of many groups  Broadened view of social responsibility of business calls more attention to social concern  Includes  Environmental Protection  Inclusion of Minorities and Women in the Workplace  Employment of Special Needs  Healthy and Safe work environment  Social Concerns in the Community or the world

3 Environmental Protection  Conservation is saving scarce natural resources  Goal of many companies  Example Vehicle corporations making vehicles that consume less gas or are electric  Non-renewable resource is a natural resource that cannot be replaced when used up  Gas, oils, minerals  Pollution  Occurs when the environment is tainted with the by products of human actions  Some production cause pollution of lakes, rivers, and air  A social responsibility business takes actions to improve or change operations that cause pollution  Federal Government has set standards for water and air quality  The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

4 Workplace Diversity  Businesses are more and more sensitive to the role of women, ethic groups, physically challenged, and older workers.

6 Workplace Diversity - Ethnicity  Workforce should reflect the group in the community  A major challenge is facing businesses today involves learning how to manage a workforce made up of workers who represent the diverse cultures in society

7 Workplace Diversity- Gender  Removal of Barriers for Women  Employers are not allowed to exclude women applicants from physically demanding jobs unless they prove the job requires physical skills that women do not have  Glass Ceiling- invisible ceiling to how far a woman can be promoted

8 Workplace Diversity- Disabilities  Accommodate individuals who are physically challenged  Passage and enforcement of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)  Other federal and state legislation  Must have wheelchair access  Must have accommodations for people with sight and hearing disabilities

9 Workplace Diversity- Age  Eliminate Bias against older workers  Age Discrimination in Employment Act bans employers from using age as a bias for employment decisions  Hiring  Promotions  Termination from job  Protects employees older than 40

10 Job Safety  Safe place to work  Free from risks that could cause an accident  Full protection from fire and other hazards  Know how to manage the unexpected  Safety employee training in case of an emergency  Variety of programs into practice to protect workers  Passed laws to enforce safety  OSHA is there to enforce the laws

11 Employee Wellness  A healthy workforce is a productive workforce  Workers who have a good physical health are valuable assets  Different programs to improve the health of their workforce  Stop smoking seminars  Weight loss sessions  Alcoholic counseling  Exercise and workout sessions  Seminars on Balanced diet  Sponsor sports teams to encourage employees to take part

13 Social Responsibility Evaluation  There are benefits and costs for social responsibility  Benefits  Expanded justice for groups of a society  Enhanced company image  Reduced need for government actions  Improved quality of life in a community and around the world  Increased awareness of social issues among workers, consumers, and others  Costs  Money must be spent- donations, non polluting equipment or safer equipment, repairs to remove risks, wellness programs, and social programs  Must make profit to stay in business  Spending at a suitable level so you don’t hurt your business and increase problems in the community
