2 2014-2015 WHAT IS A COMMUNITY SCHOOL A community school is a place and a network of partnerships between the school and the community that help children learn, families succeed, neighborhoods engage and communities thrive. With support and resources from the community, community schools care for the whole child – academically, emotionally, physically and socially.

National Center for Community Schools Children’s Aid Society, New York City

5 2014-2015 COMMUNITY SCHOOLS AROUND THE NATION TACSI is part of more than 100 community school initiatives across the country, all addressing the realities that face today’s schools and educators:  Cultural disconnects  Disengaged students  Poverty  Too much unstructured time  Unaddressed health needs  Low attendance and chronic absenteeism  Unsafe school environments  Overburdened and under resourced schools

8 2014-2015 HOW COMMUNITY SCHOOLS DIFFER Community schools take a “whole child” approach to education, addressing any barriers that may affect a child’s ability to learn. This means there is intention behind every partnership, program and service to ensure no child is overlooked.

9 2014-2015 HOW COMMUNITY SCHOOLS DIFFER In a traditional school, teaching is what happens. In a community school, we also create the conditions so that teaching and learning can happen.

10 2014-2015 HOW COMMUNITY SCHOOLS DIFFER In a traditional school, school is for students. In a community school, school is for the students, their families and the community.

11 2014-2015 HOW COMMUNITY SCHOOLS DIFFER In a traditional school, education is the sole responsibility of the school. In a community school, education is the shared responsibility of the families, the school and the community.

12 2014-2015 WHAT IS TACSI The Tulsa Area Community Schools Initiative (TACSI) is a collaboration between 17 Tulsa Public Schools and eight Union Public Schools, locally unified under a national education reform strategy known as Community Schools. Gilcrease Elementary is one of 25 Community Schools in Tulsa County.

16 2014-2015 SCHOOL NAME: A COMMUNITY SCHOOL School Name Elementary became a Community School in Year Here All full-service Community Schools have a Community School Coordinator to facilitate the implementation and management of the development of community school activities, events, programs and services.

18 2014-2015 SCHOOL NAME: OUR SITE TEAM A Community School Site Team is the focused planning committee behind every successful community school.  Create a shared vision  Identify desired results  Align and integrate the work of partners within the school In 2013-2014, School Name’s Site Team prioritized Youth Development/Out of School Time, Health & Health Education, Mental Health/Social Services, Family & Community Engagement This year, our Site Team prioritizing improving Culture & Climate, Increasing Attendance, and improving Achievement.

20 2014-2015 COMMUNITY SCHOOL FUNDS  Community School funds, or “Site Funds” are available for the purpose of implementing programs, services and events that will address the school’s top priorities.  The Site Team meets to collectively decide how funds will be used for the year and should be inline with the school’s overall improvement plan  Funds are managed by the TACSI Resource Center and approved by the TACSI Management Team.
