2. Solids and Liquids Narrative Today was the day! Naya was so excited to have her friends come over to play with her in her backyard. As she got her breakfast ready, she couldn’t stop smiling as she thought of all the fun she would have with them. Finally, her friends arrived in time for lunch. Her mom set up a picnic for everyone to enjoy. Yummy! As they enjoying their lunch, Naya and her friends felt the heat of the sun. Naya wished for something cold to cool them off! She knew exactly what everyone needed. Popsicles!!! But Naya’s mom frowned and said that they didn’t have any popsicles. Just then Naya saw extra juice and got an idea. She remembered that liquids like juice or water can change into solids. Naya’s mom quickly found the popsicle tray and the children took turns pouring the liquid into the trays. Then Naya’s mom carefully placed the popsicle tray in the freezer where the liquid would turn into a solid when frozen. After couple of hours, the children observed that the wet liquid had changed into a solid. It was hard, cold, and a perfect thing to enjoy on a hot, sunny afternoon. Naya and her friends sat together enjoying their treat. Her friends complimented her on her great idea of making the popsicles. Naya said, “Thank you but it is just like taking water and freezing it to make ice.” Just then, the children saw three solid objects in the sky. They were colorful, flexible and were amazing to watch. Naya and her friends decided to chase after the kites. So, they left their popsicles on their plates and ran after the flying solid objects. When the children returned from their adventure, they noticed that their solid popsicle had changed from the sun’s heat. Much of the popsicle had melted! The children were disappointed. Just then, Naya’s mom arrived with more popsicles for everyone to enjoy. The children knew that this time they needed to eat the solid treat before the sun’s heat changed it back into a liquid. As they ate their sweet treat, no one complained about the popsicle melting in their warm mouth. In fact, the children thought it was the best place for a popsicle to be!
