1 What is Chlorine ? By Anastasiya Koziychuk

2 What Are Elements? Definition: Is one of a class of substances that cannot be separated into simpler substances by chemical means. I will be presenting the structure, history, and importance of chlorine.

3 Chlorine’s Atom - - - - - - - P=17 N=18 - - - - - - - - - -

4 What is the structure of Chlorine?
Description: liquidly, greenish yellowish, and a VERY strong odor Number of P, E, N: P=17; E=17; N=18. Atomic weight: 35.5 Atomic number: 17 Symbol: chlorine=Cl

5 What is the history of Chlorine?
Discovered in 1774 by Carl Wilhelm Scheele Named chlorine by Sir Humphry Davy Discovered by treating muriatic acid with manganese dioxide First used in World War II to kill

6 Why is Chlorine important?
In the past used: to kill, making medicine, and widely used in making everyday products Today life uses : disinfecting water, paper products, dye, textiles, petroleum, food, solvents, paints, plastics Future prediction of use: to disinfect or clean more things than water

7 Interesting Facts Almost never found alone
Was first used to kill in World War II Has two founders that got credit for finding chlorine Named after Greek word meaning greenish- yellowish. Scheele thought Cl contained oxygen.

8 Conclusion Before I started this project I did not know that chlorine was used to kill people In World War II. I also did not know anything about who discovered it. It was interesting to find out that two scientists discovered it. All I knew before I started to research it was that I swim in it everyday! Oh, and I knew my mom used it to clean my clothes. (with Clorox)
