Number of AP exams passed by students with less than 50% expectancy to pass:
Multiple factors contributed to these results… Today we will look at two of those: Common Formative Assessments & Grading
Formative assessments are designed to inform teacher practice: They are assessments for learning Analogy: Formative : Summative as Check-up : Autopsy
The goal of our CFA process is to generate feedback for teachers and students without penalizing students with traditional grading practices Research is clear on this matter: feedback is crucial for learning to occur, grades are not crucial
What does the CFA cycle look like? Course teams create assessments together based on the agreed- upon essential power standards for a section/chapter/unit Teachers administer the formative assessments according to a team- developed calendar Assessment results are collected and analyzed at subsequent team meetings for the purpose of determining the areas in which students are deficient Teams jointly plan for corrective action in the deficient areas, to share strategies for exemplary areas, and to make decisions about how to proceed teaching the next essential standards
Examples: We use a couple of programs for assessment construction – ExamView is one example: An example of an AP US assessment (Handout 2)
Data generated from this assessment example must be used by the teacher and student to determine corrective action Examview allows for multiple types of reports: An example for our AP US assessment report (Handout 3)
The next step would be corrective action, which can take many forms Here is an example from our AP US assessment (Handout 4)
The same process can be used for FRQs & DBQs Released versions are awesome FRQ and Corrections Example: MoreMore handouts!handouts!
How does non-traditional grading apply to the CFA process? Corrective work can be weighted more heavily than the assessments Retesting results after corrective action can replace the previous grade Weaker standards can be continuously rolled into subsequent assessments Berkmar High School Grading Guidelines
