1 Florida Department of Education Regional Executive Directors
Assessing Student Mastery of the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards Florida Department of Education Regional Executive Directors February 10, 2010 Victoria Ash and Vince Verges, FDOE

2 Common Core Standards and Assessment in Florida
Currently, the Common Core College and Career-Ready (CCR) Standards are still in draft form. They can be viewed here: Draft standards for Grades K through CCR are to be released this week. Victoria Ash and Vince Verges, FDOE

3 Common Core Standards and Assessment in Florida
Florida is the lead state in a consortium of 12 states working toward common assessments. The vision for the consortium states is to collaborate to build common formative, interim and summative assessments. Victoria Ash and Vince Verges, FDOE

4 Common Core Standards and Assessment in Florida
Departures from Florida’s current statute would require legislative change before adopting assessment programs that vary from current law. Decisions on the direction of future assessments should be clearer after the first Race to the Top award in the coming months, as well as the end of the legislative session in early May. The current 2007 standards in R/M are the current standards we are instructing and building assessments to. Some Common Core. Victoria Ash and Vince Verges, FDOE

5 Assessment Update Glossary
FCAT - Based on old Standards FCAT II - Based on most recent State Board approved Standards Calibration Sample – Carefully selected group of schools/students representative of all students statewide whose response data are used to generate information for operational scoring. Victoria Ash and Vince Verges, FDOE

FCAT II Reading Victoria Ash and Vince Verges, FDOE

8 FCAT II Reading Tests, Grades 3 – 10
Multiple-choice items only. 2010 field test items are written to measure 2007 standards. 2011 tests will use items from the field test that are the most closely aligned with the draft 2009 standards and Common Core. Mostly non-copyrighted texts, including public domain materials (e.g., The Bill of Rights, Twain, O’ Henry, etc). More cognitive rigor. Victoria Ash and Vince Verges, FDOE

9 FCAT II Reading Reporting Categories
Vocabulary Reading Application Literary Analysis Fiction/ Nonfiction Informational Text/ Research Process Grades 3-5 20% 30% 6-7 8 25% 9-10 Victoria Ash and Vince Verges, FDOE

10 Sample Grade 8 Reading Item
Requires students to synthesize details across the two texts and then generalize beyond the texts. Two of the points of view have explicit ties to the texts, while two do not. The correct answer is one of the latter. The options require some prior knowledge; the assumptions are reasonable; and the options provide enough contextual explanation if students are not familiar with certain terms. Which person is most likely to have a viewpoint that most differs from that of the authors of the article and poem? A. an ecologist who studies the effects of wolves on habitats B. a congressman who helped pass laws associated with wolves in the wild C. a rancher whose cattle might be affected by wolves on open rangelands * D. an American Indian who believes in preserving important pieces of the past The item below is supported by a paired passage that includes a persuasive informational article and a poem. The article presents several compelling arguments in favor of protecting wolves in the American West. The article does not acknowledge any problems associated with wolves and does not present any counter arguments. The poem presents a Romantic, lamenting view of wolves, with the endangered wolves symbolizing the vanishing American wilderness. Victoria Ash and Vince Verges, FDOE

Suki threw her dart in the center ring 4 times, and Trish threw the dart in the center ring 3 times. At these rates, how many more times will Suki throw her darts into the center ring than Trish after 180 throws? Answer: Suki 1:3; therefore, 60 successful Trish 1:4; therefore, 45 successful Suki makes 15 more successful.
