The Green Cross Code is a set of steps to help you cross the road. Remembering the Green Cross Code when you cross the road will help you get to the other side safely.

When you decide you need to cross the road you need to find a safer place. Can you think of any safer places to cross? If there isn’t a pedestrian crossing choose somewhere where you can see clearly in both directions. You need to have a clear, straight path to the other side of the road. First find a safe place to cross Definition A pedestrian crossing in a special place where people can walk across the road safely.

Stop just before you get to the kerb. Take a step back to stop a passing car knocking you with their wing mirrors. Stand where you can see any oncoming cars and make sure they can see you too. It is important that you stop your feet but that you also stop doing anything that might distract you from crossing the road safely. STOP! Can you think of any distractions you might have whilst crossing the road?

When you are waiting to cross the road it is important that you check in both directions. The traffic travelling closest to you will mainly come from your right in Britain. Look right first, then left and check your right again to make sure nothing has changed. LOOK!

Listen to the traffic around you. Sometimes you can hear traffic coming before you can see it. Emergency vehicles have their siren on if they are on their way to an emergency. Take a step back and look and listen again when the road is clear. LISTEN! How can you tell if a car is getting closer to you by listening? Will the traffic sound louder or quieter if it is closer to you?

Is it safe to cross? If there are cars coming – let them pass before looking and listening again. When it is safe, go straight across the road – do not run. THINK! Keep looking and listening as you cross the road until your safely at the other side.

Remember… Even if you are using a pedestrian crossing it is important to use the

There are many places that would be a safer place for you to cross the road that are designed especially for pedestrians. These are called pedestrian crossings. There are different types of pedestrian crossings. Some are controlled by traffic lights and others are controlled by a crossing warden. Definition A pedestrian is a person who walks

There are a four different types of traffic light pedestrian crossings that use the red and green men: Pelican Crossing Puffin Crossing Toucan Crossing Pegasus Crossing What does the red man mean? STOP – do not begin to cross the road. Press the button and wait for the green man. What does the green man mean? The green man is your signal to look right, look left and look right again. Listen. Check that the traffic has stopped before you begin to cross the road. Keep checking until you are safely across the road.

A Pelican Crossing is controlled by traffic lights. If you want to use a Pelican Crossing you need to press the button on the wait box which is usually on your right hand side – it may be on your left if it is a one way street. Across the road there is the red and green man. Wait for the green man to appear before checking that all the cars have stopped and it is safe for you to cross. Keep checking in both directions, listening carefully until you are safely at the other side of the road. If the green man begins to flash DO NOT start to cross the road but if you are already crossing then continue safely to the other side of the road.

A Puffin crossing is the newest type of pedestrian crossing. A Puffin crossing is a Pedestrian User Friendly INtelligent crossing and has lots of special features. The red and green men are on the ‘wait’ box on your side of the road – they are normally on your right unless the traffic is coming from your left (e.g.one way street). Press the button and wait for the green man. Remember to check for moving cars and listen before stepping into the road. If you walk across the road between the metal studs the lights will keep the traffic stopped long enough for the slowest person to get to the other side. What special features can you find on a Puffin Crossing that makes it a clever crossing?
