2. Year One Still Having Fun!!  The children are continuing to access the new curriculum in a lively, fun and play based way. This will support them in their transition from Reception to Year 1.  They will continue to work and play in a variety of small groups, with partners or sometimes as a whole class.

Independent Learning  Learning through play is still an important part of curriculum.  Learning is linked to Year 1 objectives which you have been given in the handout.  Children are still accessing their own learning through continuous provision bases. More adult led and independent work is gradually introduced throughout the year.

12. Reading and Phonics  Please send the reading bag and books every day.  Please talk about the stories and ask Who? What? When? Where? Why?  Please practise “tricky” words which we will send home shortly.  We aim to read with the children and to change books twice a week.  Please sign your child’s reading record book each time you hear them read.  Daily phonics lessons following Year 1 Phonics Letters and Sounds programme. Your child’s reading book matches the phonics they have been taught.

18. Independence  Throughout Reception the children have become increasingly independent, looking after own coats, bags etc.  In Year 1 we encourage this independence, as the children will only become really efficient in their learning if they are able to work and think for themselves.  Please encourage them to do as much for themselves as possible.

19. Home Learning  Reading – please read for 10 minutes with your child every night  A homework pack will be sent home shortly.  Written homework will be sent home once a week to support learning done in class.

20. Physical Education  P.E day is Wednesday.  The children come into school in their P.E. kits and remain in them all day – velcro trainers if possible please!

21. How can you help?  Practise reading and phonics.  Counting and counting games – snakes and ladders etc  Encourage you child to be as independent as possible.  Help with correct letter formation and pencil grip
