2 What is CPOE?

3 The computer system that allows direct entry of medical orders. It reduces errors by minimizing ambiguity and works best with clinical decision support. Definition

4 Why CPOE?

Meaningful Use 5 Objective Use computerized provider order entry (CPOE) for medication, laboratory and radiology orders directly entered by any licensed healthcare professional who can enter orders into the medical record per state, local and professional guidelines. Measure More than 60 percent of medication, 30 percent of laboratory, and 30 percent of radiology orders created by the EP during the EHR reporting period are recorded using CPOE. Exclusion Any EP who writes fewer than 100 medication, radiology, or laboratory orders during the EHR reporting period.

Changes in 2013 6 CMS added an optional alternate measure to the objective for CPOE. It is based on the total number of medication orders created during EHR reporting period. This measure will be required for all providers in Stage 2.

7 Attestation Requirements

Measure 1 – Medication 8 Denominator - Number of medication orders created by the EP during the EHR reporting period Numerator - The number of orders in the denominator recorded using CPOE Threshold - The resulting percentage must be more than 60 percent Exclusion - Any EP who writes fewer than 100 medication orders during the reporting period

9 Denominator - Number of radiology orders created by the EP during the EHR reporting period. Numerator - The number of orders in the denominator recorded using CPOE. Threshold - The resulting percentage must be more than 30 percent in order for an EP to meet this measure. Exclusion - Any EP who writes fewer than 100 radiology orders during the EHR reporting period. Measure 2 – Radiology

10 Measure 3 – Laboratory Denominator - Number of laboratory orders created by the EP during the EHR reporting period. Numerator - The number of orders in the denominator recorded using CPOE. Threshold - The resulting percentage must be more than 30 percent in order for an EP to meet this measure. Exclusion - Any EP who writes fewer than 100 laboratory orders during the EHR reporting period

11 ePrescriptions SureScripts = Prescription Routing Clearinghouse Medi-Span = Third Party Drug Database What’s required? – Dose, duration, dispense & frequency

12 ePrescriptions - Coded Drugs What really matters for CPOE? Coded medications Be careful when adding new drugs

13 ePrescriptions - Drug Interactions Vital drug interaction alerts provide added peace of mind Multiple alerts built in Customize your level of alerts

14 ePrescriptions - Drug Interactions

15 Electronic Labs Bi Directional Individually mapped to each patient Sent to patient portal Linked to CPT codes and/or standardized lab codes

16 Electronic Labs - Added Capability Flow sheets, trending and graphing
