Hydrology Hydro means water logy means the study of Frank Beckwith Avalon Middle School SSS Standard SC A.1.3.5
The Big Picture The Hydrosphere is one of the five Spheres That make up the Earth System Earth HydrosphereAtmosphereLithosphere Celestial Sphere Biosphere
Water Properties Polar Molecule pH neutral Adhesion Cohesion Surface Tension High Specific Heat Capillary Action Expands when it freezes
Adhesion Water sticks to Water
Cohesion Water Sticks to other things remember your miniscus
High Specific Heat It takes a lot of heat to raise the temperature of water. It boils at 100 degrees Celsius It also takes a long time for it to cool down, this keeps the earths temperature from being extreme.
Capillary action Water and the things dissolved in it move up small spaces or tubes, even against gravity
Expands when it freezes What would happen to all those fish if water sank when it froze?
Get out your journal and click below when you are ready to start.
Hunt down these facts. 1.What forms does water exist as on the earth? Ex…lakes 2.Where is most of the fresh (non-saltwater) in the earth? 3.List 5 properties of water. 4.What are the states of matter that water exists as and what are the changes in state called? 5.What is a water table? 6.What is runoff? 7.What is streamflow? 8.What does an artesian well do? 9.What is a sinkhole? 10.What does USGS stand for?
