Bridge Standards & Practices Bridge Design & Drafting Manual (BDDM) Bridge Drawings Upcoming Bridge Training

Overview: Links to ODOT Bridge Information BDDM – Recent Key Updates Proposing Changes to the Manual Deviations from BDDM Bridge Drawings – Start to Finish Bridge Section Training Updates

ODOT Bridge On-Line Links Bridge Engineering Home Page http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/HWY/BRIDGE Bridge Design & Drafting Manual (BDDM) Bridge Standard Drawings Use “Br. Standards & Manuals” Link Standard Drawings also via Roadway Engineering Home Page

Bridge Engineering Home Page

Br. Standards & Manuals Page

ODOT Bridge Example Drawings ftp://ftp.odot.state.or.us/Bridge/BDDM In the Example_Drawings folder Also: Cell_Library Bridge_Example_Designs BDDM_Figures

BDDM Nov. 2005 Selected Updates 1.1.2.2 Scour Analysis 1.1.7.2(2) Pedestrian Structures – Live Load 1.1.7.4 LRFD Ductility, Redundancy and Operational Importance Factors 1.1.7.5 Sidewalk Loading – New section 1.1.8.4 End Bents – Concrete facing on MSE walls 1.1.14.2(1) Stay-in-Place Forms 1.2 Steel – Various updates 1.2.1.9 Deck Pouring Sequence

To Propose Changes to BDDM: Go to Introduction, “Revising The Manual”, page INTRO-5 Follow Step-by-Step procedure Not needed for bringing routine errors to our attention (typographical, etc.)

BDDM “Deviation” Process When you want to do something differently than BDDM policy specifies Send E-mail request to Bridge Standards & Practices Committee stating “what” and “why” Committee will review and respond

“Deviation” vs. “Exception” Roadway Engineering Design “Exception” process is a more formal request to use geometry, etc. that doesn’t meet operational standards

Bridge Standards & Practices Committee Bruce Johnson, State Bridge Engineer Kevin Davidson, Br. Standards & Practices Engr. Gary Bowling, Br. Operations Managing Engineer Craig Shike, Concrete Hormoz Seradj, Steel Holly Winston, Seismic & Bridge Rails Jan Six, Foundations

Create CAD Files & Drawings Three Types of CAD Files Layout File Sub-structure File Super-structure File Layout FileSub-structure FileSuper-structure File

Drawings are Reviewed Engineer of record reviews drawings Final Corrections have been made to CAD Files.

Mylars are Created “D” size mylars are printed All parties have signed mylars. 11” x 17” paper prints are made of signed mylars.

Plans are sent in “D” size mylars and 11” x 17” paper copies of signed mylars are sent to office of Pre-Letting in Salem Headquarters. Office of pre-Letting sends mylars to ODOT Reprographics for printing and scanning.

Contract Documents Created ODOT Reprographics sends requested material back to Office of Pre-Letting and sends Bridge mylars and scans to Bridge Engineering Section Headquarters, front office. Bridge front office returns signed mylars to original design office. Loads scans into the Bridge Data System (BDS).

Project is Constructed

As-Constructed Drawings Project Manager submits as-constructed comments to design office. Engineer of record reviews comments Drafter places as-constructed comments on mylar by hand.

Distribution of As-Constructed Drawings A set of drawings with as-constructed comments are created and distributed to: Bridge Operations Engineer Region Bridge Inspector Original red line as-constructed drawings are sent back to Project Managers office.

At Completion of Project At completion of a project, what information is needed by Bridge Engineering Section Headquarters in Salem. Electronic CAD files in Microstation Version 8 format. “D” size signed mylars Calculation books Project Files Load Rating of as-constructed bridge per Load Rating Guidelines Cost Data

Bridge Mylar Flowchart

Upcoming ODOT Bridge Section Training Beginning Seismic Design: March, April, June & July, One day a month for 8 hours each month, total of 32 hrs. High Performance Steel and Accelerated Bridge Construction: March 15 & 16 What’s New in Bridge Design: May 17 & 18th LRFD Foundation design: Tentative April or May 2006
