5 History Over the centuries Ventspils has been known as the major transportation route for Russian cargo like oil, oil products, liquid chemicals, different metals, fertilisers and wood products. During the first period of Latvia’s independence Ventspils losts its significance and began to stagnate. The port and the city were substantially damaged also during the 2nd World War. 6 History For the first time Port of Ventspils was mentioned in historical chronicles in 1263. 17th century for port of Ventspils was a period of a very rapid growth and dynamic development, where during the rule of Duke Jacob in the shipyards of Ventspils more than 135 ships were built and sold to European countries. Ventspils was an important member of the Hanseatic League – union of North German trading cities. Based on the cargo turnover the Free Port of Ventspils is the largest Latvian port and one of the leading ports on Baltic Sea, at the same time being in top 20 of European ports list. 10 Goals As one of the main goals Ventspils authorities have set the development of industry in the city. Considering that, Ventspils City Council together with Ventspils Free Port Authority support all kinds of industrial development and welcome enterprises willing to set up their business in Ventspils.
