THE THREE LITTLE PIGS AND THE THREE PIGS Comparison by Stacie Lawless The Three Pigs and The Three Little Pigs are both picture books, which are different versions of the same folktale. Both are very entertaining stories. The Three Little Pigs is a good classic, and it is also enjoyable to read a spoof off the original version, such as The Three Pigs. It depends on the style you enjoy! In fact, just read them both for more amusement!

THE THREE LITTLE PIGS

 The Three Little Pigs is the original picture book of the common folktale and was retold (written) by Joseph Jacobs.  The version I found was published in a collection of stories called The Colorful Storybook in 1941. However, printed versions were from 1886.

THE THREE LITTLE PIGS  In the original version, the three little pigs build houses of straw, sticks, and bricks. The big, bad wolf blows down the first two houses, but is unable to blow down the third house. It has a well-developed story line with dialogue. "Little pig, little pig, let me come in." "No, no, not by the hair on my chinny chin chin." "Then I'll huff, and I'll puff, and I'll blow your house in."

THE THREE PIGS Three different settings for the pigs with different storylines.

THE THREE PIGS  The Three Pigs was written and illustrated by David Wiesner and was published in 2001. Using the same folktale, he created a new and different version of The Three Little Pigs.  The story begins similar to The Three Little Pigs. The pigs gather straw, sticks, and bricks and builds their houses. The wolf comes along and literally blows the first pig entirely out of the story.

THE THREE PIGS  Adventure quickly unfolds with cinematic flow, shifts of perspective, and even an uncanny sense of humor. This is definitely an interesting twist and shift from The Three Little Pigs, one which David Wiesner does a wonderful job achieving.  The visual side of the story also is taken to a new level. Dialogue balloons and text exerts make for even a more intriguing and exciting read!
