Quiet time for prayer 9

OPENING SENTENCE M: The home of God is among mortals Alleluia. C: He will dwell with them as their God Alleluia. (Rev 21:3a NRSV)

PREPARATION M: In the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen

hymn We sing our opening Hymn: Filled with the Spirit’s power LH 773CAL 293 John Raphael Peacey 1896-1971, alt.

Filled with the Spirit’s power 1. Filled with the Spirit’s power, with one accord the infant church confessed its risen Lord: O Holy Spirit, in the church today no less your power of fellowship display..

Filled with the Spirit’s power 2. Now with the mind of Christ set us on fire, that unity may be our great desire: give joy and peace; give faith to hear your call, and readiness in each to work for all.

Filled with the Spirit’s power 3. Widen our love, good Spirit, to embrace in your strong care all people of each race: like wind and fire with life among us move till we are known as Christ’s, and Christians prove.†

Introduction to the confession of sins M: Friends in Christ, God has given even to the Gentiles the repentance that leads to life. (Acts 11:18b NRSV) So let us confess our sins to God our Father and ask him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION C: We confess that we are born in bondage to sin And cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, By what we have done And by what we have failed to do.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION We have not loved you with our whole heart, And we have not loved our neighbor as ourselves. We deserve your eternal punishment.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, Have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: As a called and ordained servant of the word, I announce the grace of God to all of you. On behalf of my Lord Jesus Christ, and by his command, I forgive the sins of all of you who repent and believe, in the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen

Liturgy of the Word

The Greeting M: The Lord be with you C: And also with you

Prayer of the day M: Let us pray that we love others. C: Merciful Father, you have reached out to all people through your Son Jesus, who died for us all. Encourage us to live as your chosen people and give of ourselves to others.

Prayer of the day We ask this through Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

FIRST READING R: The first Reading for the Fifth Sunday of Easter is written in Chapter eleven of Acts beginning at verse one. Acts 11:1-18 CEV Peter explains how God's salvation is also for Gentiles

Acts 11:1-18 R: The apostles and the followers in Judea heard that Gentiles had accepted God's message. 2 So when Peter came to Jerusalem, some of the Jewish followers started arguing with him. They wanted Gentile followers to be circumcised, and 3 they said, "You stayed in the homes of Gentiles, and you even ate with them!“

Acts 11:1-18 4 Then Peter told them exactly what had happened: 5 I was in the town of Joppa and was praying when I fell sound asleep and had a vision. I saw heaven open, and something like a huge sheet held by its four corners came down to me. 6 When I looked in it, I saw animals, wild beasts, snakes, and birds.

Acts 11:1-18 7 I heard a voice saying to me, "Peter, get up! Kill these and eat them." 8 But I said, "Lord, I can't do that! I've never taken a bite of anything that is unclean and not fit to eat." 9 The voice from heaven spoke to me again, "When God says that something can be used for food, don't say it isn't fit to eat.“

Acts 11:1-18 10 This happened three times before it was all taken back into heaven. 11 Suddenly three men from Caesarea stood in front of the house where I was staying. 12 The Holy Spirit told me to go with them and not to worry.

Acts 11:1-18 Then six of the LORD'S followers went with me to the home of a man 13 who told us that an angel had appeared to him. The angel had ordered him to send to Joppa for someone named Simon Peter. 14 Then Peter would tell him how he and everyone in his house could be saved.

Acts 11:1-18 15 After I started speaking, the Holy Spirit was given to them, just as the Spirit had been given to us at the beginning. 16 I remembered that the Lord had said, "John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.“

Acts 11:1-18 17 God gave those Gentiles the same gift that he gave us when we put our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. So how could I have gone against God?

Acts 11:1-18 18 When they heard Peter say this, they stopped arguing and started praising God. They said, "God has now let Gentiles turn to him, and he has given life to them!" This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 148 CEV R: The Psalm is Psalm 148 R: 1 Shout praises to the LORD! Shout the LORD'S praises in the highest heavens. C: 2 All of you angels, and all who serve him above, come and offer praise.

Psalm 148 CEV R: 3 Sun and moon, and all of you bright stars, come and offer praise. C: 4 Highest heavens, and the water above the highest heavens, come and offer praise.

Psalm 148 CEV R: 5 Let all things praise the name of the LORD, because they were created at his command. C: 6 He made them to last forever, and nothing can change what he has done.

Psalm 148 CEV R: 7 All creatures on earth, you obey his commands, so come praise the LORD! C: 8 Sea monsters and the deep sea, fire and hail, snow and frost, and every stormy wind, come praise the LORD!

Psalm 148 CEV R: 9 All mountains and hills, fruit trees and cedars, C: 10 Every wild and tame animal, all reptiles and birds, come praise the LORD! R: 11 Every king and every ruler, all nations on earth,

Psalm 148 CEV C: 12 Every man and every woman, young people and old, come praise the LORD! R: 13 All creation, come praise the name of the LORD. Praise his name alone. The glory of God is greater than heaven and earth.

Psalm 148 CEV C: 14 Like a bull with mighty horns, the LORD protects his faithful nation Israel, because they belong to him. Shout praises to the LORD! C: Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

second reading R: The second reading for today is written in Chapter 21 of Revelation beginning at verse one. Revelation 21:1-6 CEV God will wipe away all tears

Revelation 21:1-6 I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The first heaven and the first earth had disappeared, and so had the sea. 2 Then I saw New Jerusalem, that holy city, coming down from God in heaven. It was like a bride dressed in her wedding gown and ready to meet her husband. 3 I heard a loud voice shout from the throne: God's home is now with his people. He will live with them, and they will be his own. Yes, God will make his home among his people. 4 He will wipe all tears from their eyes, and there will be no more death, suffering, crying, or pain. These things of the past are gone forever. 5 Then the one sitting on the throne said: I am making everything new. Write down what I have said. My words are true and can be trusted. 6 Everything is finished! I am Alpha and Omega the beginning and the end. I will freely give water from the life-giving fountain to everyone who is thirsty. This is the Word of the Lord C: Thanks be to God

Revelation 21:1-6 3 I heard a loud voice shout from the throne: God's home is now with his people. He will live with them, and they will be his own. Yes, God will make his home among his people. 4 He will wipe all tears from their eyes, and there will be no more death, suffering, crying, or pain. These things of the past are gone forever.

Revelation 21:1-6 5 Then the one sitting on the throne said: I am making everything new. Write down what I have said. My words are true and can be trusted.
