The Battlefield of the Mind: Mental Attitude Sins

The Human Soul Mind - Intellect Emotions Will - Volition

The Human Soul Mind - Intellect Emotions Will - Volition Subconscious Mind - Thoughts stored here Conscience – Given by God but can become worn down

The Human Soul Mind – Intellect “I think” Emotions “I feel” Will – Volition “I will”

The Human Soul Mind - Intellect Emotions Will - Volition A thought enters the human mind from God (good), from Satan or demons (evil), or from self (can be good, evil or neutral), possibly from senses

The Human Soul Mind - Intellect Emotions Will - Volition “Wherefore gird up the loins (area of intestines, guts) of your mind, be alert… (1 Peter 1:13) “All these evil things (mental attitude sins) come from within, and defile (make unclean and sinful) the man. (Mark 7:23)

The Human Soul Mind - Intellect Emotions Will - Volition Mental attitude sins can occur at the point of a thought – pride, anger (not righteous indignation), envy, jealousy, etc.

The Human Soul Mind - Intellect Emotions Will - Volition Solution to mental attitude sins – Take every thought into captivity - captivate every wrong thought and say stop to the wrong idea! Submit evil and wrong thoughts to God before it goes to your Emotions and Will

The Human Soul Mind - Intellect Emotions Will - Volition The emotions are a response of how we feel about the thought. In some cases our emotional reaction can be a sin just as our mental attitude can be a sin.

The Human Soul Mind - Intellect Emotions Will - Volition Example: Satan who said “I will” five times and the led a rebellion by one-third of the “angels” in heaven. Our emotions trigger our human will to take action on what enters our mind. We decide to follow our will instead of asking God to help do His will.

The Human Soul Mind - Intellect Emotions Will - Volition Our will takes the sin we decide to do back to the mind to figure out how to commit the sin and to tell our body and/or spirit to sin.

The Human Soul Mind – Intellect – “God thinks” and God’s ways instead of “I think” Emotions – “God feels” instead of how “I feel” Will – Volition – God’s Will and what He wants instead of “I want”

The Battlefield of the Mind Important Verse on Bringing Thoughts into Captivity: Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:6)

The Battlefield of the Mind Casting down – “to tear down, pull down, demolish without violence”, as if an altar to a pagan god Imaginations – Greek is “log-is-`mos”- “reckoning, computation, reasoning, judgment” from which we derive our root word logic Knowledge of God – “knowledge of Christian morals, right living, God’s ways” Bring into captivity – capture one’s mind; captivate Revised translation of 2 Corinthians 10:6: Tear down, pull down and demolish all reckoning, computation, reasoning, and thoughts and every thing that makes itself higher and better than Christian morals, right living, God’s ways, and capture and captivate every thought that is not of God to the obedience of God.

The Battlefield of the Mind Eliminate stinking thinking! Avoid committing sins of pride, envy, jealousy, etc. and mental attitude sins Don’t respond to thoughts with “I think, I feel, I want” but what does God want me to think, to feel and to do? Can ask, “What Would Jesus Do?” When you catch yourself in a thought that is wrong, ask for God’s forgiveness With your emotions, remember that the emotions are real but that we often make bad choices based on feelings and not on the Word of God and with what the Holy Spirit is telling us. Bring your thoughts into captivity – and start to develop the mind of Christ!
