Self Service Kiosk – For Item Check-outs in the Library Washoe County Library System (WCLS) started looking at open source self-service kiosks when we realized our current technology was financially unsustainable. We needed a less expensive alternative. After a little self discovery we were on our way to creating what has now become our technological standard self-check for WCLS.

An understanding of the software was necessary and accomplished in short order Deployed a cardboard mock up with some success Feedback - librarians are generous with telling you what they think…about anything Self Service Kiosk – For Item Check-outs in the Library

Built a full mockup that was referred to as big-brown. I still don't get it... ;~) For library staff that are seemingly gifted with big imaginations big brown appeared a bit overwhelming, unliked and misunderstood. Marketing job from the top down Consistency of our internal marketing became very important

Finding funds to bring this project to fruition Grant writer is very good and knows the Reno community LSTA (Library Services Technology Act) Friends of Washoe County Library John Ben Snow Memorial Trust Local financial resources and some of our own moneys, Able to produce 22 self checks (10 purchased outside of grant with our own money) Within two months we began distributing to the branches. Within 6 months we had all of our self-checks in place Items needed for self check build-out : Chassis – Thin Clients wired and wireless forms running a reduced version of XP Touch Screen MonitorsELO ScannersHoneywell Fusion Receipt PrinterEpson TM 88V Magnetsfor tattle-tail signature removal Self Service Kiosk – For Item Check-outs in the Library

The end result came with great acceptance Product works well at all participating branches Created a flexible product Patron acceptance was a little rough but they fell in-line rather quickly Branches are reconfiguring floor space and staff assignments to accommodate this method of business Self Service Kiosk – For Item Check-outs in the Library

The big picture – where we're going from here. Push to use open-source / alternative software Our Library is not a mandated entity so we have a need to be creative Were appreciative of our patronage Increase their interests in our future developments Become the leader in new developments for the county Increase the necessity for new discovery Bring staff and patrons on the ride

cont. The big picture – where we're going from here. Where do we go from here? Working on new ideas that allow a greater platform of freedom
