3. You are about to watch and listen to the poem ‘High Diver’. This has been composed along side visual images, representing the imagery within the poem.  Once you have finished viewing High Diver, continue on answering the questions that follow on the PowerPoint Presentation. “Because poetry constructs images in the reader’s mind through words and the musicality of the text, technology is ideal in enhancing the aural and visual qualities of any poem.” (Dixon, 2010)

4. High Diver By Robert Francis How deep is his duplicity who in a flash Passes from resting bird to flying bird to fish,

5. Who momentarily is sculpture, then all motion, Speed and Splash, then climbs again to contemplation.

6. He is the archer who himself is bow and arrow. He is the upper- under-world commuting hero.

7. His downward going has the air of sacrifice To some dark seaweed-bearded seagod face to face.

8. Or goddess. Rippling and responsive lies the water For him to contemplate, then powerfully to enter.

9. 1. The poet relies on similes and metaphors to describe what the athlete is doing in this sport; the ‘high diver’ is compared to an ‘archer who himself is bow and arrow’. Why did Francis use the imagery of a bow and arrow in his poem? What effect does this have on the poems theme? 2. What does the author mean by ‘to some dark seaweed-bearded seagod face to face? What imagery is Francis trying to evoke in this line? 3. Group Task: See if you can come up with your own similes and metaphors to describe a sports person. For example: ‘The sprinter at the blocks is like a coiled spring’. (Mahoney, 2009)  Your similes and metaphors can describe the sports people themselves of the actions they perform, such as scoring a goal or making a tackle.  You should come up with similes and metaphors to describe 3 different sports people.
