2 Maryland Work Permit Process The Maryland Employment of Minors law is designed to encourage the development of minors by allowing them to engage in occupations that prepare them for responsible citizenship, yet protect them from occupations that will be injurious to their mental, moral, or physical welfare. To ensure the safety of Marylands working youth, certain occupations are declared hazardous by the U.S. Secretary of Labor and have been adopted by the Commissioner of Labor and Industry for the State of Maryland.
