Chair : - Mrs. Anne Laperrouze - Dr. Wolf Klinz - Mr. Jorgo Chatzimarkakis - Mr. Sarunas Birutis Speaker : Dr. Wolfram Westmeier W. Westmeier ALDE Nuclear Energy Workshop Brussels, November 12, 2008 ALDE Nuclear Energy Workshop, 12. 11. 2008

W. Westmeier It is unquestionably true that at tolerable risks - ecological - environmental - financial - health - safety & security only nuclear power can support mankind in the future. But : Nuclear waste problem must be solved

ALDE Nuclear Energy Workshop, 12. 11. 2008 W. Westmeier Favourite : dual strata concept Four major technological units : Generation IV reactor (FBR) * Element separation (Reprocessing, Partitioning) Transmutation (ADS) Accelerator * NO proliferation Source: M. Touron, CEA, France

ALDE Nuclear Energy Workshop, 12. 11. 2008 W. Westmeier Key properties : - Generation IV reactor ≡ no proliferation - Generation IV reactor + ≡ no long-lived waste Transmutation - With modern technology ≡ no safety risk

ALDE Nuclear Energy Workshop, 12. 11. 2008 W. Westmeier Let us focus on Transmutation Effective and economical systems will have: - Particle Energy 0.5 GeV ≤ E p ≤ 3 GeV - Particle beam 5 mA ≤ I p ≤ 50 mA - Heavy element spallation/fission target - Maybe moderated neutrons 1)There are many variables 2)There is a lot of energy (heat) 3)There is a lot of radioactivity 4)There is not much time

ALDE Nuclear Energy Workshop, 12. 11. 2008 W. Westmeier The development task is huge Most details must be model-calculated on the basis of correct integral reference (=benchmark) data These data are missing Our Collaboration measures them

ALDE Nuclear Energy Workshop, 12. 11. 2008 W. Westmeier

0.53GeV 2.0GeV 4.15GeV 1.0GeV ALDE Nuclear Energy Workshop, 12. 11. 2008 W. Westmeier

ALDE Nuclear Energy Workshop, 12. 11. 2008 W. Westmeier The usable volume is small - Big targets are not useful - The energy density is very high

ALDE Nuclear Energy Workshop, 12. 11. 2008 W. Westmeier

ALDE Nuclear Energy Workshop, 12. 11. 2008 W. Westmeier There are many more open questions that require experimental verification such as - Use of Pu/Am/Cm as spallation target - Ceramic targets - He production in targets - Moderator optimisation - Other projectiles than protons - etc……. The Fundraising Initiative tries to support our Collaboration for these experiments

ALDE Nuclear Energy Workshop, 12. 11. 2008 W. Westmeier EU supports Transmutation in FP4, FP5, FP6 and FP7 BUT self-organisation of supported tasks does not consider measurement of integral nuclear data Thus, money is needed from elsewhere A safe solution of the nuclear waste problem is possible

ALDE Nuclear Energy Workshop, 12. 11. 2008 W. Westmeier Thank you
