2 Trading Post Throughout Canada This map shows locations of fur trading posts for the period 1600 to 1870. The first known owner of the post (France, England, Canadian independent, XY Company, North West Company or Hudson's Bay Company) and the known length of operation

4 The Roles of the Fur Trade Voyageur- Hired by the trading post to transport furs to and from Native tribes and Posts. They would travel through unknown wilderness and have to deal with possible Native Indian attacks. It was possible for Voyageurs to get sick, die, injured. They would offer the Natives certain goods in exchange for the furs. Natives- They would take part in capturing and hunting for furs and then trade with the Europeans for other goods. Goods include pots, pans, tobacco, food, silver, weapons. Many natives had their land stolen after the need for expanding the trading posts.

5 The Roles of the Fur Trade Trading Post Manager- They would supervise the trading process and decide the value of certain goods. They would hire people like voyageurs and courier de bois. Courier De Bois- These people would live among the Natives and hunt and trap the fur for the whole summer and spring seasons. They would adopt the way of life of the natives. They would dress, eat and live they way the natives did. Shipper- This part of the process involves a paid sailor, hired by the King to transport the fur back to France or England. Many ships were attacked by pirates.
