1 Jackie Joyner-Kersee Celebrating Women’s History Month

2 Background Information Jackie Joyner was born on March 3, 1962. She grew up in East St. Louis, Missouri. She ran track and played basketball at UCLA in California.

3 Important Facts Jackie married her coach, Bob Kersee, in 1986. Jackie’s brother, Al Joyner, is also an Olympic gold medalist. Jackie’s sister-in-law is the late track star Florence Griffith Joyner.

4 Accomplishments Jackie won a silver medal during the 1984 Olympics, and gold medals in the 1988 & 1992 Olympics in the heptathlon. Jackie won a gold medal in 1988, and a bronze medal in 1992 in the long jump. Jackie holds the American record for the long jump, and the world record for the heptathlon.

5 Conclusion Jackie suffers from exercise- induced asthma. Jackie retired from track and field in 2001 at 38 years old. Jackie started the Jackie Joyner- Kersee Youth Center Foundation to encourage kids in her underprivileged hometown to play sports.
