2 THESIS I BELIEVE THAT IDENTITY THEFT IS A HUGE PROBLEM THAT IS AFFECTING SOCIETY AND THAT WE NEED TO FIND A SOLUTION. WITH THE DIFFERENT KINDS OF TECHNOLOGY OUT THERE, WE CAN FIND DIFFERENT WAYS TO PREVENT THIS CRIME FROM OCCURRING. HOWEVER THE TRUE PROBLEM IS WHOSE AT FAULT, THE GOVERNMENT FOR LACK OF PROTECTION OR THE PEOPLE FOR BEING CARELESS?

4 WHAT IS IDENTITY THEFT? IDENTITY THEFT IS A FORM OF STEALING SOMEONE'S IDENTITY (PRETENDING TO BE SOMEONE ELSE BY ASSUMING THAT PERSON'S IDENTITY). USUALLY AS A METHOD TO GAIN ACCESS TO RESOURCES OR OBTAIN CREDIT AND OTHER BENEFITS IN THAT PERSON'S NAME

5 STATS IN 2010, 7.0% OF HOUSEHOLDS IN THE UNITED STATES, OR ABOUT 8.6 MILLION HOUSEHOLDS, HAD AT LEAST ONE MEMBER AGE 12 OR OLDER WHO EXPERIENCED ONE OR MORE TYPES OF IDENTITY THEFT VICTIMIZATION. AMONG HOUSEHOLDS IN WHICH AT LEAST ONE MEMBER EXPERIENCED ONE OR MORE TYPES OF IDENTITY THEFT, 64.1% EXPERIENCED THE MISUSE OR ATTEMPTED MISUSE OF AN EXISTING CREDIT CARD ACCOUNT IN 2010. FROM 2005 TO 2010, THE PERCENTAGE OF ALL HOUSEHOLDS WITH ONE OR MORE TYPE OF IDENTITY THEFT THAT SUFFERED NO DIRECT FINANCIAL LOSS INCREASED FROM 18.5% TO 23.7%.

6 THE PEOPLE MORE THAN 86% OF IDENTITY THEFT COMES FROM CARD THEFT. - USUALLY THE BANK WILL SEE WHAT HAPPENS AND DO THEIR BEST TO NEUTRALIZE THE SITUATION. (EX)

7 THE GOVERNMENT IRS (INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE) ONCE THE IRS FINDS AN ODD OCCURRENCE THE IRS PUTS AN IDENTITY THEFT MARKER ON THE INDIVIDUAL, AND KEEPS THAT MARKER ON CLOSE SURVEILLANCE.

8 MY BELIEF PEOPLE ARE AT FAULT THE GOVERNMENT CAN ONLY DO SO MUCH, BUT IT’S THE PEOPLE’S RESPONSIBILITY.
