3 Point of View Definition Refers to the perspective from which events in a story or novel are told

4 First V. Third Person First-person point of view: Narrator is a character that tells everything in his or her own words

5 First V. Third Person Third-person point of view: A story is told by a narrative voice outside of the action, not by one of the characters.

6 Limited V. Omniscient Third-person limited- the narrator tells only what one character thinks, feels, and observes.

7 Limited V. Omniscient Third-person omniscient-the narrator sees into the minds of more than one character

8 Protagonist

9 Protagonist Definition The central character or hero in a narrative or drama, usually the one with whom the audience tends to identify

10 Realistic Fiction

11 Realistic Fiction Definition A type of fiction that creates a truthful imitation of ordinary life

13 Resolution

14 Resolution Definition Falling Action –Occurs at the end of a story –Conflict is usually resolved –Loose ends are tied up

15 Rising Action

16 Rising Action Definition Refers to the events in a story that move the plot along by adding complications and expanding the conflict.

17 Satire

18 SatireDefinition A literary technique in which: –Ideas or customs are ridiculed –For the purpose of improving society

19 Satire Example Charles Dickens uses satire in “A Christmas Carol” to point out the problems of 19 th century England.

20 Science Fiction

21 Science Fiction Definition A prose writing in which a writer explores unexpected possibilities of the past or future –Using known scientific data and theories as well as –His or her creative imagination.
