4 1.4 Translating Words into Symbols Subtracting When dealing with the words that mean subtracting, be careful of how they are phrased. “Five less than a number” is translated to: “The difference between four and a number” is translated to: “A Number” The words “a number” stand for a variable, any variable. Typically, the most commonly used variable is x. If the variable is told to you, you must use that variable.

6 1.5 Translating Sentences into Equations Twelve more than the number p is 37. Eight is five less than twice the number r. Forty decreased by the number m is 24.5.

7 1.5 Translating Sentences into Equations The quotient of the number b and 4 is eight. Three fourths of the number h is 192. The sum of one third of the number s and 12 is 23. The product of 7 and the sum of twice the number x and 3 is 126. The product of 58 and the number n is 1. The product of 12 and the quantity 1 less than the number d is 84.
