3 The Old Town, historical centre of Vilnius, is one of the largest in Eastern Europe (360 ha ) and is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Geographical Centre of Europe (The French National Institute of Geography has established that the geographical center of Europe is 24 km from Vilnius)

4 University of Vilnius The University of Vilnius, one of the oldest and most famous establishment of higher education in Eastern and Central Europe, was founded in 1579. The University of Vilnius has 12 faculties, 8 institutes, 10 study and research centers, the oldest Library in Lithuania, 3 university hospitals, an Astronomical Observatory, a Botanical Garden, a Computer Center Dr. Hab. 190 Doctors 913 Academic staff 1270 Professors 179 Docents 540 Research Fellows 229 Dr. Hab. 24 Doctors 152 Students Total: 23126 Graduate 3953 Undergraduate 19173 Doctoral students 625 MD’s in residency 528 The Great Courtyard of Vilnius University and the Church of St. John. 5 Vilnius Gediminas Technical University Over 13 554 students came to the University's classrooms, with 8465 of them being first-year students. The university has 1736 staff members (1449 of them working full-time). Teaching staff numbers 904, including 49 Research fellows. There are also 117 Doctors Habil and Professors, 472 Doctors or Associate Professors, 67 Lectors and 238 Assistants. At present the University includes 8 faculties (Architecture, Business Management, Civil Engineering, Electronics, Environmental Engineering, Fundamental Sciences, Mechanics, Transport Engineering), Aviation Institute named after A.Gustaitis, International Studies Centre, Centre for Continuous Education, 10 research institutes and 19 laboratories. September 1, 1956 is considered to be the date of founding a higher technical school in Vilnius, when the Vilnius Evening division of the Evening faculty of Kaunas Politechnical Institute (KPI) was established.

6 Kaunas University of Technology More than 18 thousand undergraduate (B.S.) and 450 graduate (Ph.D.) students are enrolled in KTU's eleven faculties. Undergraduates have a choice of 36 majors, and graduate students may choose among 65 graduate areas of study leading to the Master's degree and among 17 graduate areas of study leading to the Ph.D. degree. Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), the largest technical university in the Baltic States, is the second largest institution of higher education of Lithuania. On January 27, 1920 Z. Žemaitis, a mathematician, and J. Vabalas-Gudaitis, a psychologist, together with other intellectuals founded the first centre of studies in Kaunas - the Higher Courses.
