2 What is a genre? Definition from Dictionary.com: Genre (noun) 1: a kind of literary or artistic work 2: a style of expressing yourself in writing [syn: writing style, literary genre] 3: a class of artistic endeavor having a characteristic form or technique.”

3 Let’s look at Fiction Genres

4 Fiction Genres Traditional Literature Stories that are passed down from one group to another in history. This includes:  Folktales  Legends  Fables  Fairy Tales  Tall Tales  Myths

5 Fiction Genres Fantasy A story including elements that are impossible such as:  talking animals  magical powers

6 Fiction Genres Science Fiction  A type of fantasy that uses science and technology such as:  Robots  Time machines

7 Fiction Genres Realistic Fiction  A story using made up characters and situations that could happen in real life.

8 Fiction Genres Historical Fiction  A fictional story that takes place in a particular time period in the past. Often the setting is real, but the characters are made up from the author’s imagination.

9 Fiction Genres Mystery  A suspenseful story about a puzzling event that is not solved until the end of the story.

10 Now let’s look at Non-Fiction Genres

11 Non-Fiction Genres Informational Texts that provide facts about a variety of topics like:  Sports  Animals  Science  History  Geography  Weather

12 Non-Fiction Genres Biography The story of a real person’s life written by another person.

13 Non-Fiction Genres Autobiography The story of a real person’s life written by that same person

14 Other Genres Poetry Verse written to create a response of thought and feeling from the reader. It often uses rhythm and rhyme to help convey its meaning.

15 QUIZ! Let’s pretend the following sentences are the very first sentence in a book. Can you guess which genre the book would have based on that sentence?

16 What genre? “Once upon a time, a beautiful princess lived alone in a castle.”

17 What genre? “David was afraid his mother wouldn’t turn off the TV in time to drive him to the basketball championship.”

18 What genre? “I was born in South Dakota, the seventh daughter of a red haired farmer.”

19 What genre? “Ms. Forrest was born a reader and a lover of books and ultimately became a well known library clerk in the state of Georgia during the early 2000’s.”

20 What genre? “In order to be friendly, a puppy must be introduced to other dogs and lots of strangers by the time he is 12 weeks old.”

21 What genre? “The torn glove was hidden beneath the leaves; the only clue to the missing man.”

22 What genre? “She awoke after ten months of hyper-sleep and only four days away from landing on Jupiter.”

23 What genre? “Sally’s horse smiled at her and asked “Why the long face?”

24 What genre? “Elizabeth nervously fed the chickens while imagining the British soldiers behind every tree.”

25 What genre? “Always be kind to animals, morning, noon and night, for animals have feelings too, and furthermore, they bite.”
