Photosynthesis A Study Guide

O 2 and glucose CO 2 H2OH2O Plants can make its own food [glucose] by using light from the Sun. A by-product of this process is Oxygen, which is the gas which all animals need to survive. Are plants the only organisms that can make their own food?

Photosynthetic Organisms Not so simple …. Recall organisms that are photosynthetic are known as autotrophs Plants, algae, and some bacteria like cyanobacteria can perform photosynthesis and are autotrophs So some eukaryotes and some prokaryotes can perform photosynthesis Which have chloroplasts?

PHOTOSYNTHESIS -is the process by which plants and some bacteria use the energy from sunlight to produce sugar [glucose]. -is also called carbon fixation, as carbon from CO 2 is fixed or incorporated by plants into organic glucose. CO 2 C 6 H 12 O 6

PHOTOSYNTHESIS --photosynthesis occurs inside chloroplasts for eukaryotic cells. -- photosynthesis occurs inside the cell membrane for bacterial cells

Over-all Equation: 6H 2 O + 6CO > C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 The raw materials for photosynthesis are: H 2 0 and CO 2. The products are sugar [C 6 H 12 O 6 ] and O 2 [oxygen gas]. Chlorophyll Light energy

PHOTOSYNTHESIS [consists of a whole bunch of reactions] Light Reactions -Happen only when light is present. -Water is split apart and Oxygen is released -Chlorophyll molecules are needed to capture light energy. Dark Reactions -do not require presence of light. -CO 2 is fixed and Glucose is made. -also called light- independent reactions or the Calvin-Benson Cycle.

These are energy- storage molecules. DARK REACTIONS The two STAGES of Photosynthesis are: I.Light Reactions II.Dark Reactions

Light Reactions – Need the SUN For your added interest: Clusters of chlorophyll are called photosystems

Where does all of this happen? -inside chloroplasts. Light reactions occur in the thylakoid membranes while the dark reactions happen in the stroma. Question: Where in the chloroplasts do you think chlorophyll molecules are concentrated? [HINT: chlorophyll molecules capture light]

Chloroplasts are found predominantly in leaves. Photosyn- thesis occurs in the mesophyll layers.

Plants do not use all COLORS or WAVELENGTHS of light for photosynthesis. As one can tell from the graph, plants use mostly wavelengths of light from the blue and red spectrum. Question: Do plants use the green light part of the spectrum? Wavelengths [Colors] of Light

One simple way to measure rate of photosynthesis… Inverted funnel with water plant inside Inverted test tube filled with water placed over funnel Size of oxygen gas bubble is determined by rate of photosynthesis Beaker filled with water
