Themes Stereotyping Prejudice Social Status Cultural Differences

Narrator She is a strong, young girl Does not understand or see eye-to-eye with her father Never found interest in piano as a child She wants her father to fit into the community, and is confronted about her fathers differences by people of the town “His failure weighed heavily on me, particularly after someone, possibly Pauline, told me that he was forever painting people who didn’t pay him a cent for doing it.”(Gallant 208)

Narrators Father The father did not care or have any intention of stopping his painting career just so he could fit in with the rest of the other men in his new community. He believed that you should accept you for who you are He did not care about what others thought of him He loved being a painter and he still managed to stay well grounded and level headed even when no one believed in him, including his own daughter. “No one took my father’s painting seriously as a daily round of work, least of all i.”(Gallant 208)

Pauline She has no patience for anything She cooked abominably, cleaned according to her mood Always asking questions about the family’s background Has a strong attitude “‘Cette enfant ne fera jamais rien’, I once heard her say in despair.”(Gallant 207) **explain what it means

Setting A three hundred year old town in the St. Lawrence Valley, Quebec Running through the center of the town was a narrow river, divided the French and the English Very traditional and religious

What is the moral of the story? Do not judge people based on their occupations Everybody is just as capable of doing something as the next person

Making Connections What do you think the narrator will think of her father when she becomes an adult and has a job of her own?
