The secret of happiness k Looking at the book of Philippians…

The Secret of Happiness A love that will grow Joy through difficulty Jesus our model Avoiding the banana skins Don’t worry, pray

Avoiding the banana skins of life… We are not immune!

Philippians 3 Further, my brothers and sisters, rejoice in the Lord! It is no trouble for me to write the same things to you again, and it is a safeguard for you. 2 Watch out for those dogs, those evildoers, those mutilators of the flesh. 3 For it is we who are the circumcision, we who serve God by his Spirit, who boast in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh - 4 though I myself have reasons for such confidence. If someone else thinks they have reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more:

5 circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; 6 as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for righteousness based on the law, faultless. 7 But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. 8 What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness

of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ - the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. 10 I want to know Christ - yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead. 12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider

myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. 15 All of us, then, who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. 16 Only let us live up to what we have already attained. 17 Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do.

18 For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Saviour from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

Running the race… Running the race… We press on towards the goal to win the prize… v14 And to see the banana skins before we slip…

Paul’s testimony This is so important he calls everything else rubbish v8. It’s loss or gain. v7 - 8 The banana skins External v2, 18, 19 Internal v9 not having a righteousness of my own. He encourages us to join in following my example v17

Matthew 11: 28 - 30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Paul had gained Christ v8 He was united with Jesus. (Phil 2:1) Divine rhythm of grace, peace and joy. John 16:22 …no one will take away your joy.

We long to love and serve Jesus. But we can find ourselves maxed out emotionally and physically. Jesus faced huge stress, difficulty, pain but was never unloving, sarcastic, cynical or burnt out.

Acceptance Cycle of grace Achievement Significance Sustenance

This is my son whom I love. With him I am well pleased. Matt 3:17

1. Acceptance For Jesus acceptance came before achievement and ministry. Knowing who we are in Christ - this is the joy that no one can take away. Think of birthdays – we celebrate our sheer existence!

Jesus was secure in who he was. He depended on God’s acceptance because he had huge human rejection. When we’re secure in our identity in Jesus our soul is at rest.

Paul highlights his misplaced confidence – rooted in background, heritage, privilege and attainments. v3 – 5 What has happened to Paul? He’s gone from being self- centred to Christ centred.

2. Sustenance We need to take care of our inner self. Neglect separates us from God. Sustaining grace. Replenishing our spirit.

Paul again… It’s about knowing Jesus. Gain Christ v8 Be found in him v9 To know Christ v10 Not a knowledge of facts. A knowledge gained through experience.

Paul again… Being a Christian isn’t just an alternative lifestyle. It’s an inner transformation. To be found in him v9 is an inner union with Christ (2:1) Not an experience of the past but of the present. Includes the power of his resurrection as we face the banana skins.

Jesus’ model Prayed Had close friends Did corporate worship Read the scriptures Enjoyed God’s creation Took long walks Welcomed children and fringe people Served others Enjoyed a party

Our inner self craves grace and rest. These rhythms connect us to God’s grace and rest. We rest in God like a tree rests in soil.

3. Significance We’re designed to make a difference in the world. Jesus had a good understanding of his significance. I am… And ours. You are… Significance is who we are before what we do. Opposite of performance driven.

Paul again… Paul’s significance isn’t in his credentials. v3-5 What was faultless is now nothing. Total reassessment of his reason for being alive. What ever were gains to me, I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. v7

Who did God make you to be? An encourager; an artist; a listener; a coach. Knowing our significance liberates us from hurry. Jesus was often busy but never hurried.

4. Achievement We are made to bear fruit. Fruitfulness comes from a rested soul. This is also an action of grace. Try holding your breath…

We are tempted to work against grace. We start with achievement… Here comes the banana skin..

Acceptance Cycle of grace Achievement Significance Sustenance Anti- grace cycle

Matthew 11: 28 - 30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
