Bible’s Teaching About HELL Edited from lesson & charts of Mike Willis

Jesus Affirmed Reality of Hell Matt. 5:22, 29-30 Matt. 10:28 (cf. Luke 12:5) Matt. 18:9 Matt. 23:33 Mark 9:43, 45, 47

Misuse of Jesus Harry Buis observed, “The fact that the loving and wise Saviour has more to say about hell than any other individual is certainly thought-provoking” (quoted by Anthony Hoekema, The Bible and the Future 266). How ironic that “Christ tells us more about hell, and He is the one we use to assure ourselves that there is no hell” (John H. Gerstner, Repent or Perish 15).

Where Has Hell Gone? Kenneth S. Kantzer, editor of Christianity Today, wrote, “The last sermon on hell I heard, I preached myself. And that was 30 years ago” (Feb. 21, 1986). Martin Marty delivered the 1984 Ingersoll Lecture which was published in 1985 Harvard Theological Review (Vol. 78, Nos. 3-4:381-98); it was entitled “Hell Disappeared. No One Noticed.” Jurgen Motlmann wrote, “The Church of England has recently done away with ‘hell.’ Its Commission on Doctrine has substituted ‘total nonbeing’ for hell” (“In The End, All is God’s: Is Belief In Hell Obsolete?”, Sewanee Theological Review 40:2 (1997): 232-4).

Where Has Hell Gone? Richard Buckham:... no traditional Christian doctrine has been so widely abandoned as that of eternal punishment. Its advocates among theologians today must be fewer than ever before. The alternative interpretation of hell as annihilation seems to have prevailed even among many of the more conservative theologians (“Evangelicals In Defense of Hell — An Annotated Bibliography With Extended Introduction,” Journal of Religious and Theological Information, Vol. 2, No. 2 [1996]:73- 94; see p. 74).

Upcoming Homer Hailey Book Announcement “This is a follow up to Hailey’s Commentary on Daniel, A Prophetic Message, published in 2001. This companion volume deals with God as ‘the king of the nations’ (Jer. 10:7) and His judgment upon nations and individuals. The main focus of the work is the final judgment and fate of the unrighteous, according to what the New Testaments says and does not say. Hailey reaches the interesting conclusion that for the wicked the soul ceases to exist, as it is destroyed in hell. Foreword by LaGard Smith of David Lipscomb University.” To be published February 2003 “This is a follow up to Hailey’s Commentary on Daniel, A Prophetic Message, published in 2001. 10 Assaults Against Hell Materialism Universalism Restorationism (not the restoration movement) Annihilation Conditional immortality

Conditional Immortality At death, both body and soul die Both wicked and righteous raised Immortal body given only to righteous Wicked punished for a time commensurate with their personal sin & then annihilated

Let Us Examine THE BIBLE TEACHING ABOUT HELL

Matthew 25:41 Wicked go to place prepared for Devil & his angels What does the Bible tell us about that place? 2 Pet. 2:4 -- For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment. Jude 6 -- And angels that kept not their own principality, but left their proper habitation, he hath kept in everlasting bonds under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

Matthew 25:41, cont. Rev. 20:10 -- And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where are also the beast and the false prophet; and they shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.  Torment – not annihilation  Day & Night – without interruption  For ever & ever – without end

Matt. 25:41, cont. “Eternal fire” is defined by modifying phrases:  Prepared for the devil & his angels  Rev. 20:10 tells how long the devil & his angels will be punished – tormented day & night for ever and ever.

Matthew 25:46 “And these shall go away into eternal punishment: but the righteous into eternal life.” Hell lasts just as long as does life!

John 3:36 “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him” (John 3:36). “Abideth” is the present tense of meno Indicates that God’s wrath is presently and will continue to abide on him.

Other Descriptions of Eternal Punishment Where the worm dieth not & the fire is not quenched (Isa. 66:24; Mark 9:44, 46, 48) “Eternal” or “everlasting” fire (Jude 7; Matt. 18:8; 25:41) “Unquenchable fire” is fire that cannot be extinguished (Matt. 3:12; Lk. 3:17) Smoke of their torment ascendeth forever (Rev. 14:10-11) Everlasting destruction (2 Thess. 1:7-9)

Is This to be Tolerated As Well? Divorce & remarriage Non-literal interpretation of Genesis 1 Temporary hell

Fellowship Threat? Divorce and remarriage - Can’t understand Scriptures alike; must tolerate different beliefs while maintaining fellowship. Interpretation of Gen. 1 - Can’t understand Scriptures alike; must tolerate different beliefs while maintaining fellowship. Hell - Can’t understand Scriptures alike; must tolerate different beliefs while maintaining fellowship.

Growing Effect of Doctrine å Denial of eternal hell å Denial of immortality of soul å Problem for the death of Christ
