Basic Vehicle Control The importance of this lesson is to know the location and operation of a vehicles control devices in order to be a safe driver. Nicole Escudero

INSTRUMENTS, CONTROL AND DEVICES ► Instrument Panel- panel directly in front of you as you sit in the driver’s seat  Speedometer - speed you are traveling in both mph and kph  Tachometer - engine revolutions per minute. If needle enters red zone damage may occur  Odometer - total number of miles vehicle has been driven. Some have trip odometer that can be set back to zero.

Odometer Total miles driven Trip odometer How can we determine gas mileage using these gauges?

TACHOMETER SPEEDOMETER ODOMETER

Different Types of Gauges Temp. Gauge Oil Pressure

 Fuel Gauge- shows amount of fuel in tank  Temperature Light/Gauge- warns you when coolant in engine is too hot  Oil Pressure Warning Light/Gauge- warns you when oil is not circulating at the proper pressure. (does not tell you amount of oil in the engine)  Alternator Warning Light/Gauge- electrical system is in trouble. (Not generating enough electricity to run vehicle)= Battery Drained

Temperature warning light Fuel Gauge Alternator warning light Brake system warning light Oil Pressure warning light Anti-lock Brake warning light More Pictures.....

1. Gas gauge 2. Left arrow 4. Right arrow 3. High beam lamp 7. Brake warning light (4-4 in book) 8. Alternator light 9. Check engine light

Operating Devices Turn signal lever Up for Right turn Down for left turn High beam lever Windshield wiper lever Horn and Driver side airbag

Vehicle Controls The 5 basic controls found on all cars: 1. Steering wheel 2. Ignition 3. Accelerator/Gas Pedal 4. Brake Pedal 5. Gearshift * Cars with manual transmissions have a clutch.

Vehicle Controls The steering wheel controls the front wheels. Some cars are equipped with a “tilt-wheel”.

Vehicle Controls Automatic GearshiftManual Gearshift *The gearshift is attached to the transmission

Vehicle Controls Lock – locks the steering wheel when in Park. Accessory – use all electrical equipment On – when car is running. Start – starting the vehicle. IGNITION

Vehicle Controls Center Parking/Emergency Brake Release button

Vehicle Controls Brake Pedal (Right Foot) Accelerator/Gas Pedal (Right Foot) Clutch( Left Foot) Manual Transmission

Vehicle Controls Automatic Transmission Brake Pedal (Right Foot) Accelerator/Gas Pedal (Right Foot – Heel Resting on Floor)

Cruise Control – regulates speed without using the accelerator. Cancel by hitting “off” button or lightly tapping brake pedal. Operating Devices

Two types of rearview mirrors. Day/Night Lever Operating Devices

Objects in mirror are closer than they appear. Blind spot mirror. Operating Devices

The shorter the driver, the larger the blind spot. Operating Devices

Electric side view mirror adjustment Rheostat – adjusts the dashboard light Operating Devices

Hazard Lights or Emergency Flashers – All four turn signal lights flash in unison, indicates a problem or slow driving. Operating Devices

Headlights must be used: 1.Poor weather (rain, sleet, snow, ice, fog, smoke) 2.½ hour before sunrise 3.½ hour after sunset 4.Anytime windshield wipers are used Operating Devices

3 rd Brake light, required since 1985. Brake light & Taillight Reverse Lights Operating Devices

Parking lights – all lights are lit except headlights. Running lights – automatically light upon ignition. Operating Devices

Driving a Vehicle with Automatic Transmission Gear positions may be located: 1. steering column 2. instrument panel 3. console to the right of the driver a. Park : locks the transmission b. Reverse: gear used for backing up c. Neutral: allows the wheels to roll without engine power d. Driver: for moving forward e. Low: allow the engine to send more power to the wheels at lower speed
