What are Core Values? They often are unwritten assumptions that guide who we are and what we do. They underlie our words and actions. They are convictions about how a church operates, not doctrinal statements about what it believes. They are the foundation for developing relationships, church systems, ministries, and strategies.

What values do They clarify expectations. They clarify roles and relationships. They provide a compass for strategic planning. They assist in sharpening your mission statement.

Declared & Real Values Declared values Real values The further apart Real and Declared values are the more problems the leadership team will have.

A higher level of RESULTS Effective Ministry is created Declared values Real values The closer Real values are to Declared values the more Fruit will be produced.

What has shaped our Core Values? What are the special gifts of our congregation for which we’re grateful? What hurts or conflicts have we suffered and still resent? Who have our key leaders and influencers been? What have been the most important decisions we have made as a group during our history, and how do these decisions continue to shape us?

What structural NORMs have we created? What are the unspoken rules, routines, patterns, and traditions of our church that gives it a unique identity? What do people feel free and easy doing in our church? What do people “have permission” to do in our church? What do people feel pressured to do in our church? What have people wanted to do but felt pressured not to do in our church? What have people felt pressured not to do: therefore, people don’t do it and feel at ease? What issues trigger conflict?
