 VCE OES REVISION Friday the 15 th of October Shaping of Relationships & Indigenous Relationships

Shaping of Relationships  What shapes relationships? - Views - Knowledge - Experiences - Commercialisation - Media - Existing relationships - Peers

How can Relationships be Shaped? Views  an increased community awareness of conservation issues and environmental impacts  an increased interest in wilderness experiences  social perceptions of comfort and the associated demand for facilities to enhance outdoor experiences  the manner in which the media portray images of natural environments and outdoor experiences.  encourages people to become physically active in natural environments  fear of certain places or activities = avoidance  a more intimate response to places = connection to  a greater desire to visit certain places to do certain things

How can Relationships be Shaped? Knowledge  Change in interactions  Increased environmental awareness  Development of codes of practice to protect environments  People become involved in protecting natural environments  Change ways of doing interactions to look after NE  Change from a relationship focused on NE as a resource focus – what can we get out of the environment (one mark) – to one of consideration for other species and conservation  A greater awareness of places and their needs/impacts

Experiences  Change in interactions and therefore view  Appreciation of specific natural environments  May seek out other experience else where if negative  Change ways of doing interactions to look after NE  Increase in environmental awareness  A change in the way we view the NE  Encouraged to do again

Commercialisation  Greater education of the environment - Commercial surfing schools educate their clients about coastal issues and minimal impact appropriate in coastal places. This might lead to more people developing respect for the coastal environment and starting to care about what happens to it.  develops a relationship where the environment is not very important as the key factor is the experience – maybe  May not want to do the experience again 9interaction or view may change) due to overcrowding  May visit areas that we wouldn’t  Increased environmental awareness of areas

Media  helps to encourage people to have certain type of relationship with the environment  led to the rise of adventure sports, as more people are looking for an adrenalin buzz, when they wouldn’t normally  an increased community awareness of conservation issues and environmental impacts  Make encourage us to visit areas we wouldn’t normally  A greater awareness of places

Existing Relationships  Causes people to build strong connections with places and then deciding that they need to help protect these places  people recognise that to make money from environments you also need to protect and sustain them – this then shapes the R

Peers  Go do different places with peers for certain experiences; This may make us: Change our view (remember R = Perception and Interaction) Build a connection to certain area and change interactions Feel the need to protect it and do so
