2 The House on Mango Street Discussion [p. 86-110] Before Esperanza only wanted a house, but now her dreams have added a new dimension. Let’s analyze the following quotation: ▫ “People who live on hills sleep so close to the stars they forget those of us who live too much on earth.... One day I'll own my own house, but I won't forget who I am or where I came from” [86-87]. ▫ What does this reveal about Esperanza? Why does Eszperanza want to be “beautiful and cruel” when she is older? [88-89] What lesson is Esperanza’s mother teaching her in “A Smart Cookie”? [90-91]

3 The House on Mango Street Discussion [p. 86-110] In what way is Esperanza different from Sally? Why is she different from Sally? Will she ever become like Sally? [94-102] What do the three sisters show Esperanza? [104-105] What was the major conflict of the story? How was the conflict resolved? ▫ If you are having trouble figuring out the conflict and how it was resolved, answer this question, "How do you know Esperanza will never end up like Sally?“ What can you predict Esperanza’s future holds? Why?

4 The House on Mango Street What can we take away from the book? Cisneros is sending you a message about what it is like for people growing up in the world. Sometimes she wants to narrow some of the ideas down to a specific culture and a specific type of person, but she also wants you to see that much of what she wants to show you is universal. She wants you to see some of yourself in this book. To understand the lives of others is to gain understanding of one's own life.
