Do Now 1/5/15 Pick up pre assessment. Sit in your new assigned seat. Look at back wall to find out who is in your group.

Do Now 1/6/15 1.Take out your individual instructions and your group investigation proposal. 2.Work with your group to develop a procedure including the following: 1.What data are you going to collect – how many trials (at each temperature) are you going to do? 2.What needs to stay constant? 3.Create a data table for collecting your data 4.Writing step by step instructions. 3.Remember that when you are done you are able to explain how and why temperature affects the rate of the reaction and how/why the concentration of the reactant affects the rate of reaction.

Helpful Information/Reminders Rate is something happening/unit of time like (miles driven per hour) Rate of the reaction will be measured in mol/sec. You will need to figure out how many moles of magnesium are reacting Before cutting up your magnesium, measure your piece in cm and weigh it on a scale. Will you measure rate or will you calculate rate? How? Planning and carrying out Investigations – Scientific & Engineering Practice Identification of variables Number of trials w/ data table to match & units! Step by step instructions w/ measurements and equipment Your procedure does not need to look anything like another group – there are many ways to design a procedure to answer our question. After you carry out this procedure, you will have a chance to improve with part 2

Instructions 1.Work with your group to develop a procedure including the following: 1.What data are you going to collect – how many trials (at each temperature) are you going to do? 2.What needs to stay constant? 3.Create a data table for collecting your data 4.Writing step by step instructions. 2.Remember that when you are done you are able to explain how and why temperature affects the rate of the reaction and how/why the concentration of the reactant affects the rate of reaction.

Do Now 1/7/15 1.Take out your individual instructions and your group investigation proposal.

Helpful Information/Reminders Collision theory of reactions In order for a successful reaction to take place 3 things must happen. 1.Reactants must COLLIDE. 2.They must collide in THE CORRECT ORIENTATION. 3.The collision must have ENOUGH ENERGY (called the activation energy – specific to each reaction). If you can change the frequency of collision, the energy with which they collide or the orientation, then you can change the rate of reaction. Crosscutting concepts Cause and Effect – Natural phenomena (what happened to rate when you change the conditions) have causes and uncovering why things happen is a major part of science. Stems and system models – Creating a model to explain what happens during the chemical reaction helps others to understand the concept.
