University Industry Collaboration Guven Yalcintas, Ph.D. Vice President Technology Transfer Office The Research Foundation of SUNY Alfred, NY-April 27, 2006

Peace and Prosperity Through Science and Collaboration Overview Define Technology Transfer Funding Gap Relationship –Industry side –University side –Examples Big Company Collaboration Small Company Collaboration Ideal Collaboration 2

Peace and Prosperity Through Science and Collaboration Technology Transfer Is… 3

Peace and Prosperity Through Science and Collaboration Technology Transfer is… Relationships Contact Sports 4

Peace and Prosperity Through Science and Collaboration Technology Transfer Is… Intellectual Property Market Development Commercial Development SUNY Innovations Unmet Needs Licenses Deals Spin-outs Start-ups 5

Peace and Prosperity Through Science and Collaboration Funding Gap 6

Peace and Prosperity Through Science and Collaboration University Relations from Industry Side Annual R&D expenditure as % of sales income –The research-based pharmaceutical industry 19 –Chemicals in general 5 –Electronics 6-7 and –Automobile manufacture 4-5 7

Peace and Prosperity Through Science and Collaboration Highlights from 2005 Annual Report Chartered in 1951 –Sponsored Research 8,300 programs8,300 programs $735 million in FY ending 2005$735 million in FY ending % government – 40% private60% government – 40% private –Technology Transfer Five Offices – 31/64 campusesFive Offices – 31/64 campuses –245 new invention disclosures –193 patent applications filed –78 license and option agreements executed –34 U.S. patents issued in fiscal 2005 RF, Central Office 8

Peace and Prosperity Through Science and Collaboration Example of Hoffman-La Roche In 1996/97 spent $1.7 billion on research and development Development 70%, ie mostly clinical testing of new therapeutic compounds. Research-Discovery 30% Outside of the company 5-10% of the discovery expenditure, This proportion is growing sharply to about 25%. 9

Peace and Prosperity Through Science and Collaboration In Addition They Support Large number of PhD students Postdoctoral fellowships and Collaboration with universities on specific research where the university has particular expertise. Global activity and not confined to Europe. 10

Peace and Prosperity Through Science and Collaboration In a Smaller Scale Armored Dynamics –SUNY Geneseo Software need –CACT-SUNY Surface science –NYSTAR –Product-Body armor to save lives 11

Peace and Prosperity Through Science and Collaboration Commercial Development We kiss a lot of frogs Plus 12

Peace and Prosperity Through Science and Collaboration Commercial Development Sometimes they are still frogs Plus 13

Peace and Prosperity Through Science and Collaboration Commercial Development Sometimes they turn into a prince Plus 14

Peace and Prosperity Through Science and Collaboration Ideal Collaboration Direct Response to Industry's needs –R&D Agreement IP Clause –Technology Development »In University by Faculty »In company by Company Scientists »Either Place by Collaboration Joint Ownership First Right to Negotiate 15

Peace and Prosperity Through Science and Collaboration Big Companys Need The research currently being done was not as productive as it would need to be in the future to maintain current business success. The target is for each top 10 pharmaceutical company to produce 3-5 new successful chemical entities each year (currently companies typically are achieving about 1): This would require about new projects to be initiated each year. 16

Peace and Prosperity Through Science and Collaboration Big Picture Such a growth in activity will require a sharp increase in skilled people, or in the productivity of those currently employed, or the out-sourcing of projects, and particularly a lot of new ideas. Ideas were an essential element in achieving success, they alone were not always sufficient; successful innovations did not always rapidly follow from dramatic discoveries; eg monoclonal antibodies. 17

Peace and Prosperity Through Science and Collaboration Final Picture To achieve all of this activity, Industry and universities must understand each other better and work more closely and productively together. 18

Peace and Prosperity Through Science and Collaboration Create Collaboration Out of the Box –IP2IPO –Kairos Raising capital Flotation in London Market in 2007 –Relation with other universities Imperial College Sheffield University 19

Peace and Prosperity Through Science and Collaboration Summary Analyze Be creative Be flexible 20
