Why?  How does Hamlet react to seeing the ghost?  Why doesn’t Horatio want Hamlet to go with the ghost?  How has Horatio’s attitude toward the ghost changed since the first scene?  What qualities of personality does Hamlet show in this scene? (Use examples!)

3  What does the ghost reveal about his current situation?  Describe how the ghost treats Hamlet. (Use textual evidence!)  What does Hamlet resolve to do as the result of the encounter with the ghost?  How does what we learn about Claudius in this scene compare to the man we met in Act I, scene ii?

4  Who are the major characters we meet in Act I?  Provide short character descriptions of each.  Which characters leave a favorable first impression and which leave an unfavorable first impression? Explain your opinion using textual support.  List at least 3 “pros” and 3 “cons” for both King Claudius and Hamlet’s characters.
