Current Status of EUMETSATs GSICS Products SEVIRI-IASI Inter-Calibration GSICS Corrections: NRTC & RAC for Meteosat-9: Demonstration – regular production NRTC & RAC for Meteosat-8: Prototype – regular production NRTC & RAC for Meteosat-7: Prototype – regular production SEVIRI-IASI Inter-Calibration GSICS Bias Monitoring: NRTC & RAC for Meteosat-9: Prototype – regular production NRTC & RAC for Meteosat-8: Prototype – regular production NRTC & RAC for Meteosat-7: Prototype – regular production Pre-Operational Checklist for NRTC & RAC for Meteosat-9: Complete ATBD Uncertainty Analysis Traceability Statement

6 June 2011: GSICS Exec Panel Meeting WMO Geneva, GSICS -Testing by EUMETSAT -testing was done by EUMETSAT as part of the GSICS Product Acceptance Procedure (GSICS Product External Review Form) Colleague at EUMETSAT who is not at all familiar with GSICS was tasked with this. Main findings: Documentation and actual data extraction from the GSICS Server were straightforward and could be done without any problems Slight problem encountered with the data export functionality of ncbrowse (NASA was informed about that) Accept Terms and Conditions button or Copyright information is missing Link to version of MSG Level 1.5 data is mission (reprocessing will produce newer versions) Impact on product: see next slide

6 June 2011: GSICS Exec Panel Meeting WMO Geneva, GSICS -Testing: Total Precipitable Water Product Without correction With correction: Observed (small) differences mostly due to bias in IR13.4 channel Better coverage, i.e. less failed retrievals Horizontally smoother fields, probably more realistic

6 June 2011: GSICS Exec Panel Meeting WMO Geneva, GSICS -Testing by UK Met Office -testing was done by UK Met Office as part of the GSICS Product Acceptance Procedure (GSICS Product External Review Form) Main findings: Documentation clear and logical (with some typos!) I believe the method fulfills its intended purpose fully Relevant files were easy to find. File names awkward to use on Linux Suggested we add links to netCDF readers Time stamp in files difficult to use Reliability of servers and products was good. Tested impact of IR13.4 bias correction to Cloud Top Height retrievals…

6 June 2011: GSICS Exec Panel Meeting WMO Geneva,

Developing new Meteosat-HIRS inter-calibration Using ATBD for GEO-LEO hyperspectral IR as basis for new Meteosat-HIRS product Code used for collocation and analysis of inter-calibration data for GSICS Planned to use NCDC homogenised HIRS data record as reference [Shi & Bates, 2011][Shi & Bates, 2011] But limited to the water vapour channel in clear sky conditions so we need to analyse the impact of these limitations for applications other than UTH

6 June 2011: GSICS Exec Panel Meeting WMO Geneva, June update on NWP Bias Monitoring Study Analysis of NWP Bias Monitoring statistics and future strategy Difficult to obtain exact agreement between the double differencing statistics from NWP bias monitoring and the direct comparison of collocated radiances. Because model biases do not exactly cancel out when comparing non-identical channels. So developed an approach to calibrate out the model bias differences by comparing the statistics from the NWP double-differences with those from direct comparisons in the same geographic/geometric/radiance bins. Developed method of combining multiple channels of reference instrument (IASI), based on weighted average of results within radiance bins (WF differences) But most channels show radiance-dependent bias, which may be due to residual cloud. Under investigation by UKMO before further quantitative analysis possible.

6 June 2011: GSICS Exec Panel Meeting WMO Geneva, June update on progress to Operational status Migrate Meteosat-IASI products to pre-operational status Combined ATBD for all Meteosats for ease of maintainance Wrote up uncertainty analysis for Meteosat8- and Meteosat7- IASI inter-calibration. Implementing AIRS as optional reference as backup to IASI for inter-calibration of Meteosat Implemented GSICS code to download and read AIRS data
