2 A FRACTION is a number that represents a part of a whole.
Fractions are useful whenever you need to split things up. 1 Whole Cake 4 pieces are the same as 1 whole cake

41 Identifying and Writing Fractions
 A fraction tells about the parts of a whole or a set.  The number on the top of the fraction represents the shaded part of the whole. It is called the numerator.  The number on the bottom represents the total number of equal parts in the whole. It is called the denominator. 1 = red shaded part ___ 3 = total number of circles 1 = green part 2 = total parts = yellow part ___ = total equal parts

46 Comparing Fractions If you were really hungry
would you rather have 1/4 of a pizza or 1/2? 1/2 of course! Would you rather have 1/2 or 2/4 of a pizza? They’re the same, silly! When the numerators are the same, the smaller the denominator, the larger the fraction. When the numerators are different, use a picture, fraction bars or other manipulative to help you compare. The same fractions can have more than one name. These are called Equivalent Fractions.

48 Now, play a game! FIRST: Color the paper copy of your fraction strips. Each strip should be a different color (ie: 1/2’s blue, 1/4’s yellow, etc). SECOND: Cut this into strips, then fractional pieces. Put all your pieces in an envelope. 2 5 Each player rolls the number die. Using the number of fractional pieces on the die, try to make the biggest fraction you can, without making a whole number. You must only use one color strips!!!!! An improper fraction such as 7/4 has a numerator greater than the denominator. Example: 7/4  Think  Mixed Numbers A mixed number has a whole number part and a fraction part. Example: 2 3/4  Think next

She is making cookies for the fourth grade bake sale. She needs 1 and 3/4 pounds of butter to make the cookies. A. How many full pound butter boxes and how many extra sticks does Mrs. Smith need for the recipe? B. How many quarter- pound sticks are needed? 2. Two and a half cups of flour are needed to make a pizza dough recipe. Mrs. Jones lost her one cup measure. She has a half cup measure that she will use. How many half cup measures does she need for the recipe? 3. Mrs. Brown’s fourth grade class is planning a pizza party. There are 27 students in the class, and they decided to order the 8 cut pizza. If each student receives two pieces, how many pizzas do they need to order ? Are there any slices left? Draw a picture to show your work.

Next you need to copy it on a recipe card, and then underline the mixed numbers. Repeat these steps for the frosting recipe. 3.
