15 15 Thinkfinity & Common Core A fifth grade teacher wants to help students “Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions….” [CC5.NF.2] using a lesson entitled A Brownie Bake. This requires students to apply measurement skills to determine the correct amount of each ingredient and also assesses their understanding of fractions as they decide how to divide and share the brownies with their classmates.A Brownie Bake Mathematics – Example #1 http://illuminations.nctm.org/LessonDetail.aspx?ID=L194

16 16 Thinkfinity & Common Core To help 8 th Graders “Use the equation of a linear model to solve problems…” [CC.SP.8], teachers could select the Line of Best Fit interactive that allows students to plot a set of data on a coordinate grid and determine the equation for the line of best fit. Line of Best Fit Mathematics – Example #2 http://illuminations.nctm.org/ActivityDetail.aspx?ID=146

17 17 Thinkfinity & Common Core The Common Core Standards for Language Arts require students to read, write, speak, and listen across the content areas using challenging and complex materials in preparation for success in college and careers in their chosen fields. Language Arts

18 18 Thinkfinity & Common Core A third grade teacher interested in helping students improve their ability to read and comprehend information texts wants students to “determine the main idea of a text; recount the key details and explain how they support the main idea.” [RI3.2] The teacher might select Brass Instruments and Pitch, a lesson plan that provides factual information and vocabulary development about a non- fiction topic. Brass Instruments and Pitch Language Arts – Example #1 http://artsedge.kennedy-center.org/educators/lessons/grade-3-4/Brass_Instruments_and_Pitch.aspx
