12 ITU-T Euro-DOCSIS - Large scale deployment o Capacity supported by todays systems: 38 Mbps downstream 10.2 Mbps (v 1.1), 40.9 Mbps (v 2.0) upstream o Service tiers provided by MSOs 64 kbps... 4 Mbps downstream typically 128 kbps upstream volume-based, time-based usage limits o Service take-up in some regions in Europe e.g. Belgium 30%... 40% of households with cable connection

14 ITU-T View into the future o (Euro-)DOCSIS service tiers offered today are not sufficient for midterm service planning o 3 – 5 years requirements for downstream bandwidth per user: 10 Mbps o IP service penetration forecast 20 – 50 % medium term almost 100 % long term

15 ITU-T View into the future (cont.) o TVoIP for VoD and video streaming will stimulate bandwidths demand will occupy the major portion of IP bandwidth o Traffic characteristic will change new statistical traffic models required for maximum channel utilisation

16 ITU-T Summary o Euro-DOCSIS cable communication systems have been evolved to support requirements of European cable MSOs o Robust system with large scale deployments o Higher layer protocols for VoIP, etc. due to commercially rolled out on top of Euro-DOCSIS o Further evolution of system required to satisfy MSO demands future service provision
