3 If fifty pence pieces are not exchanged for sweets, they rattle for months inside money boxes. Exchange- 兑换,汇兑通过交换获得: --At that time the British pound exchanged for $2.80. 那时一英镑可以兑换 2.80 美元 Rattle-v. 发出卡嗒卡嗒声 --A train rattled along the track. 火车喀嚓喀嚓地在铁轨上疾驶

5 For most of them, fifty pence is a small price to pay for a nice big bar of chocolate. Pay the price for 为 … 付款 --Who paid the price for this shirt? Very few of the fifty pence pieces and pound coins I have given him have found their way there. Instead he bought himself fifty pence worth of trouble.

6 On his way to the sweet shop, he dropped his fifty pence and it bounced along the pavement and then disappeared down a drain. Bounce-v.( 使 ) 反跳, 弹起 Pavement-n. 人行道 Drain-n. 排水沟 George took off his jacket, rolled up his sleeves and pushed his right arm through the drain cover( 下水道井盖).

7 A crowd of people gathered round him and a lady rubbed his arm with soap and butter, but George was firmly stuck. stick- v. 被难住:被固定、卡住、塞住或阻住 --She has been stuck in traffic for an hour. 她被卡在交通阻塞中达一个小时 The fire brigade was called and two firefighters freed George using a special type of grease. Fire brigade-n. 消防队 Fire fighter-n. 救火队员 Grease-n. 油脂

8 George was not too upset by his experience because the lady who owns the sweet shop heard about his troubles and rewarded him with a large box of chocolate. Reward-vt. 酬劳, 奖赏 --His efforts were rewarded by success. 他的努力获得了成功。
