© 2012 Autodesk Class Summary  In this session, we will discuss how modern students learn, and why it is essential to move beyond the textbook in order to bridge the gap between theoretical and practical application. Discover how mobile apps allow students to perform simulation and engineering calculations right from their iPads, with Autodesk ® ForceEffect ™ for static systems analysis and Autodesk ® ForceEffect ™ Motion for mechanical systems. Learn how easy it is to use these apps and integrate them into your classroom in order to capture student interest and attention, while linking them to the basic concepts presented in traditional textbooks.

© 2012 Autodesk Learning Objectives At the end of this class, you will be able to:  Understand how the new generations of students learn differently with the advent of mobile technology.  Use mobile apps, Autodesk ® ForceEffect ™ and Autodesk ® ForceEffect ™ Motion, to perform simulation and engineering calculations for static and dynamic systems.  Adopt real-world examples that inspire students’ passion for engineering.  Adopt Autodesk Simulation apps in the classroom to bridge the gap between new learning technologies and traditional textbooks.

© 2012 Autodesk Emerging Technologies for Learning  2012 New Media Consortium report 1  Emerging technology trends for STEM education  Over the next 5 years:  Cloud Computing  Mobile Apps  Collaborative Environments  Tablet Computing  Student access becoming more common  Lower cost of technology  Internet resources 1 Johnson, L., Adams, S., Cummins, M., and Estrada, V. (2012). Technology Outlook for STEM+ Education 2012-2017: An NMC Horizon Report Sector Analysis. Austin, Texas: The New Media Consortium.

© 2012 Autodesk Mobile Apps in Learning  Apps are free or low cost, explosive growth!  Students can learn anywhere, across multiple devices  Relevance for STEM education  Ever-growing repository of information  Provide students with practice activities to aid learning  Apps and games as on on-ramp to spark interest in STEM subjects

© 2012 Autodesk Learning Trends  Key drivers of mobile technology adoption in STEM education:  Today’s kids expect to learn wherever and whenever they want  More students want to use their own devices for learning  New emphasis on active learning in the classroom

© 2012 Autodesk Challenges to adoption  Key challenges to emerging technology adoption in STEM education:  Formal technology training for teachers not widespread  Educational system’s own resistance to change  How to bridge the gap for student access to new tools globally  Online content must be more mobile-friendly

© 2012 Autodesk Simulation apps must be easy to use.

© 2012 Autodesk Autodesk ForceEffect  Mobile Apps for Statics and Dynamics Problems  Real-time solving and instant feedback  Two Flavors:  Autodesk ® ForceEffect ™  Static system analysis  Autodesk ® ForceEffect ™ Motion  Dynamic (kinematic) simulation

© 2012 Autodesk But I Can’t Use ForceEffect!  This is outside my comfort zone!  Technology is changing too quickly, I can’t keep up!  My students know more than I do!  I’m not trained on mobile technology!

© 2012 Autodesk Reasons You CAN and SHOULD Use ForceEffect  You know what a free-body diagram is.  You want to solve for unknowns.  You already know the basic principles.  You do not need technical expertise.  Apps are easy to install and start using.  You want to help (and impress!) your students!
