4 III. Access or Excel? a. On the surface, both programs seem similar. After all, they store data, and you can enter data in a grid of cells. b. The question is, “how do you want to organize your data”? c. Access has a relational structure that helps keep large amounts of information accurate and provide you with customized manageable tables. d. Excel is used mostly for analysis of numbers using formulas, while Access is used for storage of large amounts of data for convenient ‘access’ that will help inform your decisions. 4Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2011. 5 IV. DEMONSTRATION/ GUIDED PRACTICE a. Now I’ll show you how to select a template and enter basic data. i. Navigating to an opening Access 2007 ii. Selecting and downloading a pre-built template (Assets) from the ‘Getting Started’ page (NOTE: You’ll need to be connected to the internet to do this) iii. 6 V. Independent Practice Now you’ll be responsible for gathering “home inventory” data to create your own Access database: a. Brainstorm fields needed to enter home inventory information b.
