QoS Model for Networks Using 3GPP QoS Classes (draft-jeong-nsis-3gpp-qosm-01) Seong-Ho Jeong, Sung-Hyuck Lee, Georgios Karagiannis 63rd IETF Meeting

2 Outline Motivation and Objectives Issues Identified
3GPP QoS Classes/Attributes and QoS Mappings Additional Optional QSPEC Parameters UE-Initiated NSIS Signaling GGSN-Initiated NSIS Signaling Future Issues Next Steps

3 Motivation A QOSM provides a specific set of parameters to be carried in the QSPEC Examples of QOSMs: RMD QOSM, Y.1541 QOSM, XG QOSM, etc. Need for QoS interworking between 3GPP and non-3GPP networks e.g., 3GPP QOSM QNI QNR

4 Objectives Main objectives of this document:
Describe a 3GPP QOSM based on 3GPP QoS classes and bearer service attributes Propose additional optional QSPEC parameters

5 Issues Identified QoS mappings between 3GPP and other QoS classes
Additional optional QSPEC parameters for 3GPP QOSM UE-initiated NSIS signaling procedure GGSN-initiated NSIS signaling procedure

6 UMTS QoS Classes (TS 23.107) 3GPP TS 23.107 UTMS QoS Classes
“QoS Concept and Architecture," Provides the framework for Quality of Service within UMTS and specifies four QoS classes UTMS QoS Classes Conversational class Streaming class Interactive class Background class QoS Mappings QoS Mapping between TS and Y.1541 QoS Mapping between TS and DiffServ/RMD

7 UMTS QoS Attributes UMTS traffic class Maximum bit rate
Guaranteed bit rate Delivery order Maximum SDU size SDU format information SDU error ratio Residual bit error ratio Delivery of erroneous SDUs Transfer delay Traffic handling priority Allocation/Retention priority Source statistics descriptor Signaling indication

8 Additional Optional QSPEC Parameters
3GPP QoS Classes Delivery of Erroneous SDU (DES) Source Statistics Descriptor (SSD) Signaling Indication (SI) SDU Format Information (SFI) Transfer Delay (TD) Packet Loss Ratio (PLR) Traffic Handling Priority (THP)

9 UE-initiated NSIS Signaling
QoS-NSLP at the UE (QNI) sends a QoS-NSLP RESERVE (in case of sender-initiated approach) message The RESERVE message contains the Initiator QSPEC to the next hop in the external IP network through the GGSN. The Initiator QSPEC specifies optional parameters specific to 3GPP QoS model as well as generic QSPEC parameters for the application flow

10 GGSN-initiated NSIS Signaling
The GGSN populates the initiator QSPEC based on the PDP context to create an NSIS session The QoS-NSLP at the GGSN (QNI) sends a QoS- NSLP RESERVE (in case of sender-initiated approach) message which contains the Initiator QSPEC to the next hop in the external IP network QoS mapping between the 3GPP and other QoS Classes (e.g., DiffServ or Y.1541) should be performed at the GGSN

11 Future Issues NSIS signaling within the IP based transport part of UMTS NSIS signaling between UMTS and WiMAX/WiBro via an IP-based backbone NSIS signaling between UMTS and WLAN via an IP-based backbone

12 Next Steps Should it be a WG item?
Propose to make this become an NSIS WG document Progress draft as an Informational RFC with feedback and review by the NSIS WG?
