TopQuadrant Faceted Browsing in The Semantic Web TopBraid User Group Meeting, SemTech, San Jose, CA May 21, 2008 Willie Milnor

Faceted Browsing Browse data rather than search Filter results using criteria Refine results More specific Les specific Navigate integrated data Heterogeneous sources Map results

Model in Composer Develop ontologies Design navigation layout Specify possible criteria

Configure Application Utilize TopBraid Live client API Out-of-the-box components Customize component layout

What we’ve done Composer Modeling Configure faceted layout Live API Application layout Component configuration

Narrative of Demo Steps  In the demo, we saw the end-to-end process of configuring and using a faceted search application. I.We first used TopBraid Composer to configure the layout for faceted search for Persons. For this, we navigated to the Person class in our ontology, and then selected the ‘Faceted Navigation Layout’ editor for the class (slide 3). In the layout editor, there were panels defined for (1) ‘General’, (2) ‘Geographic’ and (3) ‘Business’ information. Each panel contained a label (to appear at the top of the panel in the application search component), as well as, a few widgets for respective properties with Person as the domain. For instance, the ‘Geographic’ panel contains a widget for the ‘Place of Residence’ property.

Narrative of Demo Steps (2) II.After configuring the layout of the faceted search component, we viewed the custom client application based on TopBraid Live (slide 4). The application contains panels for (1) the faceted navigation (which is what we configured in TopBraid Composer), (2) a results panel, (3) a map panel for mapping the results, and (4) a form panel for viewing a specific result. III.We then performed a search for Persons by opening one of the widgets that we configured in TopBraid Composer and selecting a search criterion in the widget. This immediately displayed the matching results in the results panel. As this returned a large number of matches, we narrowed the results further by selecting a search criterion in another widget. Once we were down to a reasonable set of results, we mapped all of the results on the map panel, and viewed a couple in the form.

Narrative of Demo Steps (3) IV.After viewing and using the application, we took a brief look at the Flex MXML source to see how the application was configured using out-of-the box Flex components from the TopBraid Live client-side API. This small sample showed how the components are laid out, and how they are wired together such that clicking/selecting in one component invokes actions in another of the components.
