4 Matter is made up of atoms *Matter is made up of atoms. *An atom is the smallest whole particle of matter. * The atom is made of three smaller Sub-Atomic particles: Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons.

9 Sub-atomic Particle Protons = p+ Located in the nucleus of the atom Have a positive charge (+)Mass = 1 amu

13 Atomic Vocabulary Review Atom- The smallest piece of a substanceNucleus – The center of an atomProtons- Subatomic particle found in the nucleus. It has a positive chargeNeutrons- Subatomic particle found in the nucleus. It has no charge. Neutral.Electrons - Subatomic particle found in the an area called Energy levels. This is also known as “The Electron Cloud.” Negative charge.The # of protons is the same as the # of electrons.The mass of a proton & neutron is 1 amu. The mass of an electron is almost zero.
