3 Exploration Travel for the purpose of discovery.

4 Colonize A group of people leave their native country to settle in a new land, but are still connected with the parent nation.

5 Charter A contract given to someone to establish a colony.

6 Mercantilism A trade economy between the mother country and the colonies. An exchange of raw goods for finished products, where the mother country reaped more benefits.

7 Era A fixed point in time from which a series of years is reckoned.

8 Absolute Chronology Exact dates The sequence of events that provide exact information regarding dates.

9 Relative Chronology Relative chronology is the sequence of events in relation to other event.

10 Push Factor/Pull Factor Push factors are things that push people away from a country or location. Pull factors are things that draw them to another country or location. Bel-air West Philadelphia

11 Representative Government In a representative government, power is held by the people and exercised through the efforts of representatives elected by those people.

12 Ethnicity The national or cultural heritage to which one belongs.

13 Emigrant A person who leaves a country or region to live elsewhere.

14 Separatists Protestant who, during the 1600,s wanted to leave the Anglican Church in order to found their own churches.

15 Puritans Protestants who, during the 1600’s,wanted to reform the Anglican Churches.

16 Pilgrims Separatists who journeyed to the colonies in the 1600’s for religious purposes.

17 Believed every individual had an inner light that could guide him or her to salvation. Everyone was equal in God’s sight. They also refused to fight in wars. They were fined, jailed, even executed for their beliefs.

18 Toleration The acceptance of different beliefs.

19 Persecute To treat someone harshly because of that person’s beliefs or practices.

20 Settlement A group of people seeking permanent residence for different reasons.

21 Virtue Conduct that agrees with what is morally right! Justice and Charity are virtues

22 Contemporary Living or occurring at the same time period.

23 Religious Devoted to God or to the powers or forces believed to govern life.

24 Physical Geography A branch of geography that deals with the physical features and changes of the earth.

25 Human Geography A branch of geography that deals with the physical features and changes of the earth.

26 Joint Stock Company A company in which investors buy stock in return for a share of its future profits.

27 Indentured servant Agreeing to work without pay for a certain length of time to pay for their passage to America.

28 Debtor A person or country that owes money.

29 Subsistence Farming Producing just enough to meet immediate needs.

30 Cash Crops A crop that can be sold easily in markets.

31 Triangular Trade A trade route between three destinations, such as Britain, West Africa and the West Indies.

32 Tenant Farmer A settler who pays rent or provides work to a landowner in exchange for the right to use the landowner’s land.

33 Northwest Passage A sea passage between the Atlantic and the Pacific along the north coast of North America.

34 Plantation A large scale farming system.
