The development of an international and regional airports, increased the contribution of air transport as an important factor in integrating with the rest of the world.

Maldivians these days have very modern telecommunication network spread through out the country as well as globally. Fisheries Fisheries were the backbone of Maldivian economy, the main source of foreign exchange and the main occupation of people. The Government is in the process of liberalising certain aspects of the fishing industry. Tourism Tourism did, however, develop in a spectacular manner. It lifted the economy and introduced the Maldives to the global economy.
